STRASBURG — Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg’s Samantha Hayes tossed another no-hitter. This time around, it was for a regional championship.
The Hatchets blanked Altamont in the title game of the Class 1A Windsor/Stew-Stras Softball Regional Friday, 7-o.
Windsor/Stew-Stras started the first inning with a runner on base but couldn’t get any farther than second base.
But the Hatchets came back to put up a number on the scoreboard in the second. Kendra Hayes led off the frame and was hit by a pitch. She stole second, went to third on a wild pitch and came home on her second stolen base.
Windsor/Stew-Stras then scored three more for a 4-0 lead in the third. With one out, Mya Friese reached base on an error. She crossed the plate on a single by Zaida Wascher. Samantha Hayes drew a walk and K. Hayes doubled home both runners.
Meanwhile, S. Hayes was keeping the Indians off the bases. She put Altamont down in order in the second and third innings before issuing a walk to Grace Lemke in the fourth. But that was the lone blemish, as the defense came through. K. Hayes, the shortstop, stepped on second for the force out then threw to first getting Lemke in a double play.
Then in the fifth, sixth and seventh, once again S. Hayes was on top of her game and the batters again went up and down in order to end the contest.
Windsor/Stew-Stras tallied four more runs in the sixth. K. Hayes led off with a double and Ellie Wittenberg reached base on an error. Alaira Friese got on, on a fielder’s choice and Katelyn VonBehrens reached on an error. M. Friese was hit by a pitch and Wascher followed with a double scoring two runs. When the dust had cleared, Windsor/Stew-Stras held am 8-0 lead and that’s where the scoring ended.
S. Hayes tossed the no-hitter with one walk while striking out eight.
K. Hayes and Wascher led the way in hitting. K. Hayes had a double, triple and two RBI while Wascher had a single, double and three RBI. A. Friese added a single and an RBI and VonBehrens had an RBI.
Altamont’s Lemke went six innings on the mound, giving up eight runs on seven hits, one walk and striking out nine.
Windsor/Stew-Stras advances to the Casey-Westfield Sectional today and meets Edwards County (Albion) at 4:30 p.m. The second game will also feature a National Trail Conference team, South Central will meet Casey-Westfield at 6:30 p.m. The winners advance to the championship game Friday at 4:30 p.m.

At Hutsonville
South Central won the championship of the Class 1A Hutsonville Regional Saturday.
The Cougars edged Hutsonville by a 3-1 tally.
The two teams were tied at 1-1 after the first inning. South Central moved ahead with a run in the third and finished its scoring with a run in the fourth.
Coach Alex Phillips’ crew finished with six hits led by Kinlee Thompson with three singles and an RBI, Katilyn Swift with two singles and Maddie Peddicord with a single and an RBI and Lauren Johnson with an RBI.
Peddicord went the seven innings, giving up one run on eight hits, one walk and striking out five.
South Central will now advance to the Casey-Westfield Sectional today and meet host Casey-Westfield at 6:30 p.m. The opening contest will feature Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg against Edwards County (Albion) at 4:30.

At Flora
Flora and Newton went scoreless through the first two innings before Newton broke loose.
The Eagles tallied two runs in the third and finished with one in the sixth for a 3-0 victory Friday to win the Class 2A Flora Regional.
Newton had five hits led by Addy O’Dell with a solo home run and Camryn Martin with a double. Allie Stanley, Jorjia Reich and Avery Mulvey had a single each.
Amelia Collins tossed a four-hitter. She did not give up a walk and struck out four.
Newton now advances to the Vandalia Sectional today. The Eagles will square off against Gillespie at 5:30 p.m. The opening contest features Columbia vs. Robinson at 4.
