ALTAMONT — This match was all anyone could want as Altamont and Teutopolis went to overtime before the Wooden Shoes pulled out a 3-2 win in the Altamont Soccer Regional Monday.
“We survived,” said Teutopolis coach Aaron Wendt.
The Wooden Shoes had goals scored by Gavin Buening with an assist from Simon Lee in the 22nd minute. Landyn Buening then scored in the 75th minute to tie the game.
Isaac McWhorter, assisted by Lee, scored in overtime in the 87th minute.
Goalkeeper Jake Kocher had five saves.
“The evening was breezy and cold temps but still a beautiful night for the regional semifinals,” said Altamont Coach Eric Morales. “It was set to be a huge match and what a game and what an atmosphere all around.
“T-town came out first, sneaking a beautiful head ball off a corner kick taking them up 1-0. Minutes later on a defensive clear, Ashton Buchanan tracked the ball down and ran it all the way himself with speed and force and put a goal in tying the game at 1-1 before half.
“In the second half, the tribe came out roaring with another defensive clear to Ashton who again took the ball all the way himself with speed and force netting his second goal putting us up 2-1. The game became very intense and very much back and forth until T-town was able to sneak a goal in with four minutes remaining, tying the game at 2-2, forcing overtime.
“In overtime, Teutopolis picked up a round ball bouncing around and poked it in giving them the 3-2 edge and they held strong to get the win. We played a fantastic game.”
Teutopolis improved to 14-3-3 on the season and will now face Newton for the regional championship Friday at 5 p.m. Newton defeated Pana by an 8-1 count.
