Effingham High School celebrated Senior Night with a 5-0 victory over Charleston in soccer action Thursday.

The Hearts picked up their eighth clean sheet on the season.

Maicol Sefton got a hat trick scoring three goals. Camilo Aden scored a goal and assisted on two other goals. Connor Delong also scored a goal. Jake Niebrugge assisted on two other goals.

“The win brought our season record to 18-1-3 which ties the all-time school record that we set last year,” said EHS Coach Logan Arney. “We play Taylorville  Saturday for a chance to break the all-time win record.

“It was a strong team win that continues to set us up well as we wrap up our regular season and get prepared for post-season.”

The Hearts will travel to Taylorville Saturday for an 11 a.m. contest.

At Effingham

Effingham St. Anthony racked up another victory, this one during Senior Night festivities. The Bulldogs blanked Vandalia 3-0 Thursday.

“We played very well as we continue to get healthy,” said St. Anthony Coach Martin Reyes. “After many opportunities to score, Noah Jansen, a senior, got his first goal 23 minutes into the first half from a through ball by Cole Adams, a junior. Four minutes later, Noah found his second goal from a header, after Michael Wright, a senior, took a short corner to Issac Fallert, a junior, who crossed it to the back post for Noah’s header.

“The first half ended 2-0, but Noah was not done. Twelve minutes into the second half, Eli Hiatt, a junior, sent a throw-in to Michael Wright, a senior, who took a shot that was deflected to Noah who found his hat trick on a tap-in goal. After we went up 3-0, we tried to get the other seniors to score. We came very close multiple times, but we were not able to finish the attack on a goal.

“Very proud of the way we play and very happy my players are starting to come back from their injuries.

“It was great to celebrate the contributions of our seniors: Michael Wright (captain) has led our attacks. Ronan Bailey (captain) has led our midfield playing as a box to box midfielder. Noah Jansen has played multiple positions, but developing as our striker. Ike Daiber has played mostly as a defender for many years, but developing as a midfielder as of late. Jackson Schultz is playing his first year as a defender and has been a key member of our defense. They will all be missed next year.”
