MATTOON — Altamont High School traveled to Mattoon and fell to the Green Wave by a 6-0 count in varsity soccer competition Saturday.
“It was a hot one today,” said Altamont Coach Eric Morales. “The game started out pretty even back and forth. Mattoon was able to break through midway in the first half going up 1-0. More back and forth for both teams but Mattoon got an open look on a nice shot taking them up 2-0 into halftime.
“In the second half, the game got very aggressive and pushy, lots of contact among the players. In the end Mattoon came out strong and closed out the game 6-0.
“We played a great game, not matching the score, but we had some solid appearances this afternoon.”
Altamont is back in competition Tuesday traveling south to face Salem.
At Pana
Effingham St. Anthony and Pana played to a 1-1 tie Saturday.
“We had a very competitive game,” said St. Anthony Coach Martin Reyes. “We had the majority of the possessions of the ball, but couldn’t score in most of our opportunities.
“Pana first scored in the first half after a confusion on the offside. In the second half, Cole Adams scored after we crashed the goal and the goalie mishandled the ball. We had many more opportunities but couldn’t finish them. We are very happy with the progress of the team, even with key players still out.”
