CHARLESTON — Effingham, Altamont, Newton and Teutopolis competed in opening round play of the Charleston Red & Gold Soccer Tournament Wednesday.
Effingham was a winner over Altamont 7-1 .
“It was a great way to start the year off as the team played very well together,” said EHS Coach Logan Arney. “It was an encouraging sign of what this team can do this year. Jake Niebrugge kicked things off with two goals in the first five minutes and added an assist later.
“Andrew Wagoner ended the game with a hat trick and an assist. Maicol Sefton ended with a goal and an assist. Gage Kinder and Sebastian Simoni ended with a goal each. And Connor Delong and Camilo Aden also had an assist each. Iām proud and excited with how the team looks coming into the season. We play tonight at the Red & Gold Tournament against Newton.”
Altamont then had no rest, jumping back onto the field to play Newton.
“It was a great back and forth game with both teams having multiple chances and opportunities,” said Altamont Coach Eric Morales. “With seven minutes left in the game, Newton poked a bouncing ball in the six yard box taking a 1-0 lead and finishing the game with the 1-0 win.
“We showed some great progress and started to click as a team.”
Altamont will return to Charleston Saturday for the third game against an opponent yet to be determined.
Teutopolis tied Olney at 1-1 in its first game. Landyn Buening scored the lone goal for the Wooden Shoes in the 18th minute.
T-town returns to Charleston today in a match against Rantoul at 4:30 p.m.
