Effingham High School won the championship of the Stan Atkins Golf Invitational.
CHARLESTON — Effingham High School won the championship of the Stan Atkins Golf Invitational at Charleston for the second straight year Friday.
Coach Jeff Schafer’s crew tallied a 304 followed by Mount Zion Black 318, Charleston Red 318, Richland County, Olney 319, Teutopolis 322, Effingham St. Anthony junior varsity 335, Mount Zion Red 339, Arcola/ALAH 357 and Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg 359.
Charleston’s Hudson Meister was medalist with a 70.
T-town’s Coen Pennington finished second with a 71.
Effingham’s Jack Swingler was third with a 72. Also competing for the Hearts were Leo Wyckoff fifth with 76, Cannon Bockhorn seventh with 77, Jude Traub 10th with a 79, Brody Boehm 21st with an 83 and Owen Nxuoll 53rd with a 95.
“This is the first time since I have been the coach that we won the same tournament two years in a row,” said EHS Coach Jeff Schafer. “That’s over 25 years. It’s great momentum heading into regionals.”
The Shoes finished fifth with a 322.
“Congrats to Effingham with a 304 for the win,” said T-town Coach Mike Wilson. “Coen Pennington was the lone bright spot for us with a -1 71 to finish second overall.
“Other scores include Matthew Habing 82, Kade Pennington 84, Owen Kremer 85, Lane Ohnesorge 86, Isaac Weber 87, Eli Weber 89 and Landyn Thoele 93.
The Shoes will host Sullivan Monday at the Effingham Country Club for Senior Night.
The St. Anthony junior varsity finished sixth. Competing for the Bulldogs were James Trupiano 40-40 — 80, Liam McAllaster 40-41 — 81, Cole Adams 43-49 — 92, Andrew Meyer 44-52 — 96, Trenton Sandschafer 41-42 — 83 and Daniel Ramos 49-48 — 97.
At Centralia
Effingham St. Anthony claimed the championship of the Centralia Invitational Friday at Greenview Golf Course. The invitational was a foursome (better ball) stroke play.
The Bulldogs won with 210 followed by Highland 211, Mount Vernon 223, Centralia 224, Salem 224, Freeburg 224, Granite City 230, Staunton 234, Marion 241, NCOE 245, Carbondale 246 and Sandoval 254.
Granite City’s Uhercik and Shaw were medalists with a 68.
St. Anthony’s Logan Gowin and Jameson McAllaster and Drake Brown and Briggs Whitley were tied for second with a 69 each. Gowin had a 35-34 while McAllaster had a 35-35. Brown had a 36-37 and Whitley a 34-39.
Maddux Clark and Alec Hakman finished with a 72. Clark had a 35-38 and Hakman a 36-37.
