 Area Cross Country Runners Advance From Sectionals To State

Cumberland captured third place in the Class 1A Cross Country Sectional.

Effingham St. Anthony advanced not only one team, but two teams to the Class 1A State Cross Country Meet from the Cumberland Sectional Saturday.

Those advancing will head to the State Cross Country Meet Saturday, November 8 at Detweiller Park in Peoria. The Class 1A girls will compete at 9 a.m. while the boys will compete at 10 a.m. The awards ceremonies will be at 11 a.m.

The Bulldogs finished fifth in the boys meet while the girls took sixth place. The top six teams advance along with the top 10 runners not members of those teams.

Also advancing as a team was the Cumberland boys who finished third.

In the girls meet, Shelbyville was the team champion with 91 points followed by St. Joseph-Ogden 119, Marshall 134, Urbana University 156, Tolono Unity 164, St. Anthony 188, Monticello 196, Newton 206, Arthur-Lovington/Atwood-Hammond 230, Fithian Oakwood 248, Litchfield 268, Sullivan 334, Cerro Gordo-Bement 359, Dieterich 371, Robinson 374, Gillespie 388, Armstrong 390, Tuscola 399 and Casey-Westfield 441. Altamont, Neoga, Teutopolis, Champaign St. Thomas, Lawrenceville, Sangamon Valley, Bismarck-Henning/Rossville-Alvin, Carlinville, Chrisman, Fisher, Gibson City-Melvin-Sibley, Moweaqua Central A&M, Mount Carmel, Pana and Paris had runners competing but not enough for a team score.

St. Anthony’s Isabella Keller won the individual title with a time of 16:39.9. Also competing were Aubrey Denning fifth in 17:37.2., Emeline Wines 16th in 19:05.2, Nora Niebrugge 90th in 22:26.8, Taylor Denning 115th in 24:16.2 and Nancy Ruholl 116th in 24:23.9.

Newton’s Layna Marshall qualified as an individual. She finished 14th overall in 18:54.1.

In the boys meet, St. Joseph-Ogden was the team champion with 114 points followed by Georgetown LaSalette Academy 117, Cumberland 121, Tolono Unity 140, Effingham St. Anthony 147, Monticello 150, Gillespie 181, Paris 201, Broadlands Heritage 249, Tuscola 257, Shelbyville 278, Sullivan 312, Champaign St. Thomas More 318, Dieterich 355, Newton 363, Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City 386, Robinson 449, Litchfield 465 and Teutopolis 536. Altamont, Carlinville, Lawrenceville, Chrisman, Gibson City-Melvin-Sibley, Marshall, Niantic Sangamon Valley, Arthur-Lovington/Atwood-Hamond, Casey-Westfield Danville Schlarman, Decatur St. Teresa, Greenville and St. John’s Lutheran had runners competing but not enough for a team score.

Gillespie’s Chaz Oberkfell was the winner with a time of 14:55.7.

The top six teams advance along with the top 10 runners not members of those teams.

Cumberland was third as a team with Cameron Roedl 14th in 15:55.2, Colby Roedl 17th in 16:08.8, Gavin Whitaker 35th in 16:43.9, Brett Matusas 37th in 16:45.9, Damien Chardon 39th in 16:47.5, Aydan Oakley 51st in 17:00.4 and Kade Bradley 103rd in 18:25.3.

St. Anthony finished fifth as a team to advance. Julius Ramos took 16th place in 16:08.4 followed by Camden Bloemer 24th in 16:25.2, Oliver Kreke 31st in 16:39.6, Isaac Tays 43rd in 16:50.4, Elijah Whittier 58th in 17:14.4 and Johnny Gannaway 126th in 19:21.0.

Both teams advance to State.

Dieterich’s Trevor Crutcher finished eighth in 15:38.7 and will advance as an individual. Also advancing as an individual was Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City’s August Cosart who took 12th in 15:54.8.

At Mattoon

Effingham competed in the Class 2A Mattoon Sectional Saturday.

Three Hearts runners took part in the races.

In the boys meet, Alex Gordon was 60th with a time of 16:35.0 but did not advance.

For the girls, Baylee Summers was 80th in 21:05.8 while Alaina Miller was 104th in 21:54.8. Both did not advance.

The top seven teams and top 10 individuals not members of those team advanced.
