CHARLESTON — Effingham St. Anthony and Newton claimed second place finishes in boys and girls competition at the Trojan Classic Cross Country Invitationals Saturday.
Mount Zion won the girls meet with 75 points followed by Newton 79, Breese Mater Dei 100, Mattoon 101, Taylorville 155, Sullivan 182, Effingham 183, Champaign St. Thomas More 200, Dieterich 205, Charleston 218, Bismarck-Henning-Rossville 239 and Teutopolis 272.
St. Anthony’s Aubrey Denning won the girls race with a time of 16:53.70. Newton’s Layna Marshall was third in 18:17.99 while St. Anthony’s Emeline Wines finished ninth in 19:24.88.
Taylorville won the boys meet with 24 points followed by St. Anthony 88, Charleston 98, Mount Zion 152, Champaign St. Thomas More 182, Paris 185, Sullivan 223, Mattoon 236, Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City 252, Newton 270, Effingham 295, Cumberland 314, Chrisman 333, Breese Mater Dei 368, Dieterich 394, Casey-Westfield 398, Villa Grove 424, Teutopolis 463, Centralia Christ Our Rock Lutheran 491 and Bismarck-Henning-Rossville 545.
Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg, Decatur St. Teresa, Lawrenceville, Champaign Judah Christian, St. John’s Lutheran, Marantha Christian Academy, Odin, Jacksonville Routt and Danville Schlarman all had runners but not enough for a team score.
Taylorville’s Liam Bettis won the meet with a time of 14:43.19.
CHBC’s August Cosart was fourth in 15:36.69 while Effingham’s Alex Gordon took eighth in 15:56.15 and St. Anthony’s Camden Bloemer was 10th in 15:58.76.
