 Marshall, Herrin Win Cumberland Boys, Girls Cross Country Meets, Area Runners Compete

TOLEDO — Teams converged on Cumberland High School for the annual Cumberland County Cross Country Invitational Thursday.

Marshall won the girls meet with 32 points followed by Newton 59, Fithian Oakwood 68, Fairfield 96, Dieterich 136, Bismarck-Henning/Rossville-Alvin 148 and Casey-Westfield 153.

Also competing but not having enough runners for a full team were Effingham St. Anthony, Altamont, Neoga, North Clay and Stewardson-Strasburg.

Marshall’s Molly Farrell won the meet with a time of 17:31.30. Effingham St. Anthony’s Aubrey Denning was second in 17:43.33.

Also finishing from the area in the top 10 were Newton’s Layna Marshall sixth in 19:35.76 and Heather Bergbower eighth in 20:07.34, Dieterich’s Lena Goebel ninth in 20:16.56 and St. Anthony’s Emline Wines 10th in 20:19.58.

In the boys meet, Herrin was the team champion with 42 points followed by Cumberland 81, St. Anthony 83, Paris 102, Broadlands Heritage 141, Fairfield 171, Dieterich 195, Cowden-Herrick/Beeche City 217, Newton 221, Hoopeston 244 and Chrisman 271.

Altamont, North Clay and Stewardson-Strasburg had runners competing but not enough for a full team.

Broadlands Heritage Clark Rolan was first in 15:25.55.

Dieterich’s Trevor Crutcher finished third in 15:40.83 while Cumberland’s Colby Roedl was fifth in 15:52.90 and the other local finisher in the top 10 was Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City’s August Cosart sixth in 16:01.47.
