SALEM — Effingham Junior High School’s fifth and sixth-graders finished second in the girls meet and third in the boys meet at Salem Wednesday.

“It was a 31 team meet,” said Coach Nancy Ervin. “The course was beautiful with some much needed shade and our athletes put on an incredible show.”

Effingham finished second in the girls meet with 113 points. First went to Racoon with 72 points. Effingham was followed by Selmaville 130, Olney St. Joe 142, Highland 192, St. Anthony 217, Aviston 232, Salem 232, Woodlawn 301, Mount Carmel 307, Central City 328, New Horizon 356 and Mount Vernon 463.

The Mustangs took third place in the boys meet with 115 points. Highland won with 67 points followed by Selmaville 73, Effingham, Olney St. Joseph 125, Albers-D’ville 152, Aviston 193, Germantown 211, New Horizon 275, Salem 288, Olney 312, Fairfield 322, Carriel 349 and Centralia 415.

“We brought home nine medals,” said Coach Ervin. “Medals were by A. Smith, K. Jones, L. Lovett and H. Westjohn for the girls and D. Wyckoff, C. Devall and H. White for the boys. B. Zumbahen and H. Rosen ran in the boys open.

“We showed grit, speed and heart.”
