 Cumberland Wins At 1A Casey-Westfield Regional, North Clay Beats Dieterich At Own 1A Regional

CASEY — Four players finished in double figures as Cumberland High School handed Moweaqua Central A&M a 67-36 loss in the Class 1A Casey-Westfield Boys Basketball Regional Wednesday evening.

The Pirates took the early initiative, running out to a 20-11 opening quarter lead. Reed Miller and Isaac Venatta connected on three baskets each for six points while Cameron Roedl added five and Kaleb Bierman put in a three-pointer.

The lead went to 39-18 at halftime. Roedl and Zack Harmon tallied six each while Chase Stewart scored from beyond the arc.

Cumberland continued to push its lead higher with a 20-14 third period run and led 59-32 going into the final quarter. Three-pointers were by Roedl and Stewart with one each. Venatta added on to his total with five points.

Things slowed down in the final period but Roedl hit another three-pointer and was two of two at the line.

Roedl finished with 19 points on six field goals, four from beyond the arc, and three of three at the line. Also in double figures were Miller with 12, Venatta 11 and Harmon 10.

In the other contest Wednesday evening, Casey-Westfield was a 64-48 winner over Broadlands Heritage.

Cumberland and Casey-Westfield square off for the championship of the Casey-Westfield Regional Friday at 7 p.m. The winner will advance to the Macon Meridian Sectional Tuesday and will face either North Clay or Lawrenceville who play for the championship of the North Clay Regional

At Louisville

North Clay handed Dieterich a 54-46 loss in its own Class 1A Regional Wednesday evening.

In the opener, Lawrenceville won easily over Red Hill (Bridgeport), 61-38.

In the second contest, North Clay trailed Dieterich 10-4 after the opening quarter. Dieterich’s Brock Niemerg connected on two three-pointers and Bryce Bohnhoff hit two baskets.

The Maroons pushed the lead to 26-19 at halftime. Bohnhoff scored six points while Alex Schottman and Niemerg hit a three-pointer each. Ezra Cook added four points.

But the Cardinals started to move with a 14-8 third period to trail just by a point going into the final period.

Mason Byers scored eight of his teams points on three baskets and two of two at the line.

North Clay’s momentum kept going into the final quarter as the Cardinals had a 21-12 run to pull out the victory.

Byers continued on with four baskets and two of two at the line for 10 points while Cody Zimdars hit two baskets and two free throws for six.

Byers finished with nine field goals, one a three-pointer, and was seven of eight at the line for 26 points. Zimdars ended with 12 on five field goals and two free throws and reached his 2,000th career point.

Dieterich was led by Bohnhoff with six baskets and two of two at the line for 14. Jackson Icenogle put in 10 points on four baskets, one a three-pointer and one of one at the line.

North Clay now advances to the championship game against Lawrenceville at 7 p.m. Friday. The winner then advances to the Macon Meridian Sectional to meet either Cumberland or Casey-Westfield.
