WAYNE CITY — Brownstown/St. Elmo is headed to the championship game of the Class 1A Wayne City Girls Basketball Sectional after securing a victory over Christopher by a 46-25 tally Tuesday evening.
The opening quarter was a low-scoring affair. BSE edged out to an 11-3 lead as Danika Ramsey connected on two three-pointers and Dayana Haslett put in a two-pointer and a three for five.
The lead went to 22-11 at halftime. Haslett continued on with two regular baskets and a three-pointer for seven. Madi Miller chipped in with two free throws and Presley Williams added a basket.
The Bombers didn’t let up, outscoring Christopher 16-10 in the third quarter to lead 38-21 going into the final period.
Miller tossed in three more baskets for six points while D. Haslett hit three two-pointers and a free throw for seven. Ramsey added her third three-pointer of the game and the Bombers led 38-21.
The final quarter was an 8-4 finish.
D. Haslett led three players finishing in double figures with 19. She hit eight field goals, two from beyond the arc, and was one of one at the line.
Also in double digits were Miller with 12 and Ramsey with 10.
This is the first time that the Brownstown/St. Elmo girls basketball team has ever reached a sectional championship game.
Coach Tim Pasley’s BSE squad, ranked fifth in the final Class 1A State poll, now sports a 30-3 record and is now in the Sweet 16 in Class 1A.
The Bombers will face Edwards County (Albion) Thursday for the sectional championship. Edwards County handed Sesser Valier a 62-41 loss Tuesday and was ranked in others receiving votes in Class 1A.
The winner will then advance to the Arcola Super-Sectional Monday. It could be an All-National Trail Conference super-sectional if Brownstown/St. Elmo wins at Wayne City and Cumberland wins at Argenta-Oreana.
