 Newton Wins Opening Round In 2A Regionals, Effingham’s Season Comes To Close

NEWTON — Newton High School won in opening round play of the Class 2A Robinson Boys Basketball Regional Monday evening.

The Eagles edged out to an 8-7 opening quarter lead then pushed that to 23-17 at halftime. Newton finished with a 32-21 second half against Hutsonville/Palestine/Oblong and went on for a 55-38 victory.

Kody Bergbower hit seven field goals and was 12 of 14 at the line for 26 points. He was the lone Eagles player in double digits. Hayden Mulvey, Jacob Oldham and Drake Wolf tallied eight points each.

D. Wolf led the team in rebounds with 12.

Newton is now 16-13 on the season and back in action Wednesday against Salem at 7:30 p.m.

Class 2A Vandalia Regional

Effingham saw its season come to a close in the Class 2A Vandalia Regional Monday evening.

The Hearts fell to Olney, Richland County, 44-39.

EHS ran out to a 16-7 opening quarter lead and led by as many as 10 points behind eight of Cannon Bockhorn’s 15 points. The Hearts held a 20-16 halftime lead.

But Olney came back with a 14-4 third quarter run and held off a final challenge by Effingham in the fourth quarter.

Playing their final game for Effingham were Cole Phillips, Max Buzzard, Brady McDaniel, Nolan Fearday, Hayden Wendling, Jaxon Bridges, Will Moser and Luis Gonzalez.
