The National Trail Conference boasts two girls basketball regional champions and a new 1,000-point scorer after Thursday night’s Class 1A title games across the state.

Cumberland and Brownstown/St. Elmo had little trouble capturing their regional plaques as the Lady Pirates dispatched Martinsville 47-18 at the Casey-Westfield Regional and the Lady Bombers handled Dieterich 50-19 to secure the North Clay Regional.

Cumberland’s Jade Carr became her club’s third player this season to eclipse the 1,000-point threshold in the process of securing the program’s first sectional appearance since 2011, while BSE’s Dayana Haslett outscored the opposition all by her lonesome with 24 points en route to the a second consecutive regional title for her squad.

The other NTC team in action was Windsor/Stew-Stras; unfortunately the Lady Hatchets saw their campaign come to a close at the Mt. Pulaski Regional, where the host school — ranked fourth in the final Class 1A Associated Press poll — advanced by a 50-27 final.

Cumberland 47, Martinsville 18

The Lady Pirates (26-4) limited Martinsville to eight points in the first half and finally clicked offensively themselves in a 17-4 third quarter to run away with this regional championship game at Casey.

Jude Miller paced Cumberland with 17 points, but the big story of the night was Carr. The team’s only senior starter entered play just five points shy of 1,000 for her career and hit the mark with the front end of a 2-for-2 trip to the foul line in the second quarter. The Lake Land College commit ended up with 13 points on the night.

Alysa Dittamore also finished in double figures with 11; she and Miller both scored their 1,000th points during the Lady Pirates’ championship run at the NTC tournament in Beecher City.

Cumberland won its only other regional 15 years ago. That 18-10 team was the last above-.500 squad for the program until a more recent run of success that has now seen four winning seasons (including three 20-win campaigns) in the last five years under Sammi James and now first-year head coach Brandon Miller. According to IHSA’s website, 26 is also the program’s most wins in school history; the 2009-10 team went 25-5 under Roy Clapp.

Now it’s on to the Argenta-Oreana Sectional for the ninth-ranked team in Class 1A; the Lady Pirates will face Salt Fork (Catlin) in a 7:30 p.m. Tuesday semifinal. The other semifinal that night is at 6 p.m. between Mt. Pulaski and Tri-County, while the championship game is slated for 6 p.m. Thursday.

Make it two consecutive regional championships for the Lady Bombers in a game that was close for a quarter and didn’t get out of hand for Dieterich until a 26-6 second half spelled the end of a 21-win campaign for the Movin’ Maroons at North Clay High School in Louisville.

Haslett, the program’s all-team leading scorer and just 46 shy of 2,000 points as her junior season hits the postseason stretch, notched 13 of her game-high 24 tallies during the third quarter as BSE (29-3) turned an 11-point halftime lead into a 22-point advantage. Addie Sasse scored a bucket in each quarter for her eight points, while Danika Ramsey and Madi Miller checked in with seven apiece.

For Dieterich (21-10), 1,000-point scorer Addison Miller put together one last double-figure scoring performance with 12, including a trio of three-pointers.

Brownstown’s hopeful road toward a first-ever sectional title now heads to Wayne City, where the No. 7-ranked team in Class 1A will square off with either Christopher or Gallatin County in a 6 p.m. Tuesday semifinal. Those two clubs are playing a rare Friday night title game tonight at the Gallatin County Regional.
