TEUTOPOLIS — Cumberland High School opened the day at the Teutopolis Wooden Shoes Boys Basketball Shootout with a victory Saturday.
The Pirates moved into a 15-12 opening quarter lead as Zack Harmon connected on two baskets and two free throws for six while Cameron Roedl hit a three-pointer.
Roedl continued on with seven points while Kade McMechan hit a three-pointer in the second quarter and the Pirates led 31-27.
Cumberland then had a 25-19 third period edge. Chase Stewart went on a long-range run with three three-pointers for nine and Reed Miller and Roedl added five each.
The Pirates finished ith a 14-9 final quarter.
Roedl hit seven field goals, three from beyond the arc, and two of three at the line for 19 points while Stewart and Harmon put in 12 each.
Both teams finished with nine three-pointers.
In the second contest, Mahomet-Seymour edged Triad 61-58. Goreville then downed Casey-Westfield 61-37.
In the fourth game, Nashville was a 68-54 winner over Effingham in a game heard on 979XFM.
Nashville moved into an 18-12 opening quarter lead behind the scoring of Maddox Ritzell with 11 points. Brenton Bultman and Max Reeder connected on a three-pointer each.
The Hearts were led by Cannon Bockhorn with two three-pointers and Jake Niebrugge with four. EHS shot well with 50 percent from the field and 67 percent from the free throw line.
Three-pointers rained down in the second period for the Hornets as Reeder and Ritzel hit two each. Ritzel continued on with his hot scoring with 10 points and the Hornets led 39-22 at halftime.
Jenner Pals got in a scoring run in the third period for EHS. Pals hit two regular baskets, a three-pointer and was two of four at the line for nine but the Hearts still trailed 54-35.
EHS had only one player in double figures as Pals finished with 11 on four field goals and two free throws.
In game five, Alton edged Normal Community 56-51.
The final game of the day was an exciting one as Teutopolis edged Rochester, 61-59 in a second game heard on 979XFM.
Rochester moved into an 11-8 opening quarter lead. Landyn Thoele kept the Wooden Shoes going with five points.
In the second period, Isaac McWhorter wrapped two three-pointers around a two for eight as the Shoes led 28-26.
The Wooden Shoes continued on the hot scoring in the third period with a 25-18 run to lead 53-44 going into the final quarter.
McWhorter continued on with his beyond the arc shooting as he connected on three more and a two-pointer for 11 while L. Thoele added six.
The Shoes then fell into a scoring slump in the final quarter and Rochester took advantage with a 15-5 run only two fall two points short.
But T-town shot 57.1 percent from the field and was 50 percent from the free throw line. The Shoes hit 55.5 percent from three-point range.
T-town was led by McWhorter with 21 points on eight field goals, five of those three-pointers. L. Thoele finished with 17.
Joey Probst and Addis had seven assists each. L. Thoele finished with seven rebounds.
