MOUNT CARMEL — Newton High School pounded Flora in the opening contest of the Class 2A Mount Carmel Girls Basketball Regional Saturday.
The Eagles ran out to a 23-16 opening quarter lead and led 39-20 at halftime.
Three players tallied in double figures for the Eagles. Claire Probst hit eight field goals, one from beyond the arc, and two of two at the line to lead the way with 19 points. Maddie Brummer added 18 on nine field goals and Allie Hermann finished with 11.
Hermann led the way in rebounds with 10. Probst had six assists while Hermann added five. Hermann led in steals with seven and Probst had five.
Newton is now 21-10 on the season and returns to play today in a semifinal game against Mount Carmel at 6 p.m. The second game will feature Fairfield taking on Salem at 7:30 p.m.
The winners will advance to the championship game Thursday at 6 p.m.

Class 2A Teutopolis Regional
Two games were contested Saturday at the Teutopolis Regional.
Marshall was a 68-39 winner over Shelbyville followed by Sullivan pounding Vandalia 75-32.
Teutopolis meets Marshall tonight at 6 followed by Robinson against Sullivan at 7:30.
The winners tonight advance to the championship game Thursday at 7 p.m.
Class 2A Paris Regional
One game was played Saturday at the Paris Regional.
Pana was a 45-35 winner over Palestine/Hutsonville/Oblong.
The winner advances to face No. 1 Effingham at 6:30 p.m. today followed by Effingham St. Anthony taking on Paris at 7:30.
The winners of tonight’s games will meet Thursday at 7 p.m. for the regional championship.
