 EHS Ends Regular Season Play With Girls Basketball Win Over Olney, Coach Schafer Earns 550th Win

Effingham High School finished regular season girls high school basketball play Wednesday evening with a 66-49 victory over Richland County, Olney. That gives the Hearts a 27-3 record and they finished perfect in the Apollo Conference at 10-0.

Averie Wolfe got the Hearts off in the right direction, connecting on two free throws, a three-pointer and two regular baskets for 10 of her team’s total 20 first quarter points.

Alyssa Martin put in two baskets and a free throw for five and the Hearts led 20-8.

EHS continued on with an 18-11 second quarter to lead 38-19 at halftime. Wolfe added a three-pointer, a regular basket and was two of two at the line for seven while Martin put in three more baskets for six.

The two teams played to a 15-15 third quarter and the Hearts led 53-34 going into the final period. Martin nailed another basket and was four of four at the line for six points while Cailin Ohnesorge hit a three-pointer.

Coach Schafer’s team was led by Martin with eight field goals and six of seven at the line 22 while Wolfe added six field goals, half of those three-pointers, and five of six at the line for 20.

The Hearts will now head to the Class 2A Paris Regional Monday. EHS will face the winner of the Pana vs. Palestine/Hutsonville/Oblong contest, that will take place Saturday, at 6:30 p.m.

The Hearts Monday game will be followed by Effingham St. Anthony against Paris at 7:30.
