Brownstown/St. Elmo, ranked fourth in the latest Class 1A girls basketball poll, continued to dominate local teams with a 62-53 win over Effingham St. Anthony Thursday evening in a game heard on KJ Country 102.3.
The Bombers edged out to a 13-11 opening quarter lead. Dayana Haslett connected on a regular basket, a three-pointer and a free throw for six while Danika Ramsey hit a three-pointer and Addie Sasse was three of four at the line.
Nancy Ruholl led the Bulldogs with two baskets and four of four at the line for nine of the team’s 11 opening quarter points.
The Bulldogs came back with a 15-14 second period behind Ruholl’s scoring. She connected on five regular baskets and a three-pointer for 13 of the team’s 15 points.
But the Bombers held a 27-26 halftime lead. There was even scoring as Presley Williams, Haslett and Madi Miller scored four points each.
BSE then had a 10-8 edge to lead 37-34 going into the final quarter. Sasse and Miller scored four each.
In the final quarter, it was a trek to the free throw line for both teams. The Bombers put in 13 of 14 while St. Anthony was six of nine.
Haslett went to work, hitting two three-pointers, two regular baskets and was five of six at the line for 15 while Williams put in four of four and Miller hit two free throws and a basket also for four. The Bombers shot 32.1 percent from the field and 84 percent at the line.
Brownstown/St. Elmo is a perfect 8-0 in the conference with one game remaining. The Bombers are 19-8 overall. The Bombers return to play Tuesday at Paris.
Ruholl scored 14 of her team’s 21 points in the final period with four baskets, one a three-pointer and five of seven at the line. Lilly Gannaway and Julia Schultz hit a three-pointer each.
Coach Tim Pasley’s squad had two players in double figures. Haslett hit eight field goals, three from beyond the arc, and was eight of nine at the line for 27. Miller added 13.
St. Anthony was led by Ruholl with 39 points on 13 field goals, three of those three-pointers and 10 of 12 at the line. She also led in rebounds with 15. Lauritzen added eight points. Gannaway led in assists with six. Schultz had seven boards. The Bulldogs shot 32.7 percent from the field and 82.3 percent at the line.
St. Anthony is 7-1 in the National Trail Conference, 18-9 overall and back in action Monday traveling to Cumberland.
In junior varsity play that was only contested in two quarters, St. Anthony was a 15-9 winner.
Chloe Kelley led the Bulldogs with nine points.
