 Casey-Westfield Downs St. Anthony, Effingham Drops Loss to Mt. Zion In Boys H.S. Basketball

CASEY — Casey-Westfield played host to Effingham St. Anthony in a game heard on 979XFM Tuesday evening and claimed a 63-55 win over the Bulldogs.

The Warriors moved into a 12–6 opening quarter lead as Fred Thomas hit three baskets for six points. The Bulldogs were struggling with three of eight from the field.

Casey-Westfield continued on with a slight 16-15 second period edge to lead 28-21 at halftime.

Daryn Hupp hit two three-pointers for the Warriors while Leighton Jones put in six points.

The Bulldogs were led by Aiden Lauritzen and Keenan Griffith with four points each.

Casey-Westfield got hot from three-poing range, as Jones put in two from beyond the arc, a regular basket and was two of two at the line for 10 in the quarter while Jackson High nailed two three-pointers.

The Bulldogs’ Miles Waldhoff cut loose with three baskets, one a three-pointer, in the third quarter for seven.

Griffith got on a hot streak in the final quarter. He had scored 10 points through the first three periods then hit a three-pointer, three regular baskets and a free throw for 10 in the final period but the Bulldogs couldn’t overcome Casey-Westfield.

Griffith led the Bulldogs with nine field goals, one from three-point range, and one of one at the line for 20. Also in double figures were Waldhoff with 11 and Lauritzen with 11.

St. Anthony dropped to 17-8 on the season.

Casey-Westfield improved to 16-8 and was led by Jones with 26 points while Thomas added 10.

At Effingham

It was Mega Night at Effingham as Mount Zion came calling.

The Hearts had a bad fourth quarter and ended up suffering a 47-37 loss to the Braves.

Mount Zion moved into a 13-10 opening quarter lead. EHS had three-pointers from Cannon Bockhorn and Jude Traub.

The Braves led 29-20 at halftime.

The Hearts came back with a 12-6 third quarter run. Bockhorn put in five points while Jenner Pals hit a basket and a free throw and Jake Niebrugge and Maz Buzzard had a basket each. EHS had pulled within 35-32 going into the final quarter.

But the bottom fell out as Mount Zion got back on the scoring track with a 12-5 final period. The Hearts could only muster a three-pointer from Bockhorn and a regular basket by Niebrugge.

Bockhorn was the lone player in double figures for the Hearts with 11 on four baskets, three from beyond the arc.

Effingham was a 66-28 winner in the junior varsity contest. The Hearts were led by Joel Flack with 12.
