 Stew-Stras Eighth-Grade Team Headed To State, Effingham Sacred Heart, Teutopolis Fall

Stewardson-Strasburg Junior High School captured the championship of the Class 8-2A North Clay Sectional and is headed to State.

LOUISVILLE — Stewardson-Strasburg took a 10-5 opening quarter lead and went on to win the Class 8-2A North Clay Boys Basketball Sectional Monday evening over Casey-Westfield, 37-20.

Stew-Stras pushed into an 18-10 first half lead then had a 19-10 second half run.

Johnny Richter hit three field goals, one a three-pointer and three free throws for 10 points while Adam Pruemer tallied on four field goals and two free throws, also for 10 points.

The victory gives the Comets a perfect 26-0 record.

Casey-Westfield finished the season at 22-5.

Stew-Stras heads on to the Class 8-2A State Tournament and will take on East St. Louis Younge (18-5) at 11:30 a.m. Saturday.

In other games, McNabb Putnam County (22-3) faces Carthage (22-5) at 10 a.m., Normal Metcalf (22-1) takes on Decatur Robertson (21-0) at 1 p.m. and Morton Grove MCC (12-0) and Green Valley Midwest Central (22-4) clash at 2:30 p.m.

The winners then advance to the semifinals, also played Saturday. If the Comets win, they will face the winner of the McNabb Putnam County vs. Carthage contest at 5 p.m. The winners of the third and fourth games square off at 6:30.

The third place contest is scheduled for 6 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 12 while the championship will be played at 7:30.

The Sportsmanship Pin Recipients were, Tyler Imke (Casey-Westfield) and Adam Pruemer (Stewardson-Strasburg).

 

At Paris

Teutopolis came up just short in the Class 8-3A Paris Mayo Sectional, falling to Monticello, 38-36.

The Wooden Shoes held a 10-9 opening quarter lead but Monticello came back with a 9-5 second quarter run to lead 18-15 at halftime.

Monticello continued on with a 12-7 third quarter to lead 30-22 going into the final period. T-town rallied with a 14-8 final period only fall short.

Maddux Pals led the Shoes with 12 points while Pete Brummer chipped in with nine.

T-town ends the season at 24-3.

At Sigel

Effingham Sacred Heart fell to Carrollton St. Johns in the Class 8-1A Sigel St. Michael Sectional Monday.

The Shamrocks lost 40-30.

Carrollton St. Johns heads to the Class 8-1A State Tournament.
