 EHS Racks Up Another Girls Win, WSS, BSE, C’land, North Clay Win, St. Anthony, Newton Drop Losses

CHARLESTON — Effingham High School racked up another victim in girls basketball action Thursday evening.

The Hearts put together an 18-2 opening quarter surge over Charleston as Alyssa Martin tallied 14 points on six baskets and two free throws. Maci Hayes added six while Drew Weis put in three.

EHS continued on with an 18-4 second quarter to lead 46-6 at halftime. Tessa Raddatz nailed two three-pointers while Ryley Engel and Averie Wolfe hit a three-pointer each and the Hearts led 46-6 at halftime.

The Hearts continued on with a 26-3 third quarter behind Raddatz with three from beyond the arc and a two-pointer for 11. Wolfe added five and Martin four and EHS finished with an 83-18 victory.

The Hearts rained down three’s on Charleston, ending with eight as Raddatz connected on five, Wolfe two and Engel one.

EHS had three players in double figures. Martin hit eight from the field and two free throws for 18 points. Raddatz chipped in with 17 points on six field goals, five from beyond the arc. Wolfe tallied 11.

Coach Jeff Schafer’s crew is now 7-0 in the Apollo Conference and stands at 23-2 overall. EHS is right back in action Saturday, traveling to Mount Carmel with an 11 a.m. junior varsity start.

At Effingham

At Strasburg

Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg played host to Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City as two National Trail Conference teams squared off.

The Hatchets ran out to a 15-4 opening quarter lead and went on for a 51-44 victory. Kendra Hayes hit two three-pointers and two regular baskets for 10 in the quarter while Clarissa Johnson put in a three.

CHBC’s lone basket in the quarter came from Ethel Stuckemeyer.

The Bobcats came back with a 10-5 second period to pull within 20-14 at halftime. Harper Lilly and Ryleigh Sarver connected on a three-pointer each while Lena Bowlin put in two baskets.

CHBC held the momentum in the third quarter with a slight 11-10 edge to pull within 30-25. Bowlin hit a three-pointer, a regular basket and had two free throws for seven while Stuckemeyer added four.

But Windsor/Stew-Stras came back strong with a 21-19 edge in the final quarter. Most of that came from the free throw line as Hayes hit a basket and was eight of nine at the line. Johnson added her third three-pointer of the game and a free throw for four while Lauren Longwell hit a basket and was three of four at the line for five.

Hayes finished with 25 points on seven field goals, three from beyond the arc, and eight of nine at the line. Johnson also finished in double figures with 10.

The Bobcats were led by Bowlin with six field goals, one a three-pointer and five of seven at the line for 18. Lilly added 12 and Stuckemeyer finished with 11.

At Strasburg

At Ramsey

Brownstown/St. Elmo ran out to a 20-4 opening quarter lead and went on for a 57-24 win over Ramsey Thursday evening.

Dayana Haslett put in three of four from the free throw line and two baskets for seven points while Addie Sasse and Danika Ramsey connected on a three-pointer each.

The lead went to 33-14 at halftime. Haslett continued on, scoring seven points for 14 by halftime.

Scoring slowed down in the second half as BSE had a slight 11-6 edge to lead 44-20.

Two players hit double figures for the winners. Haslett led the way with 19 points on seven field goals and five of eight at the line. Madi Miller chipped in with 13 points on four field goals, one a three-pointer, and four of four at the line.

At Toledo

Cumberland outlasted Marshall in a tough contest Thursday evening.

The Pirates held a 16-13 opening quarter lead. Raegan Jones hit a regular basket and then followed that with three from beyond the arc for 11 of her team’s 16 points.

Marshall pulled within 27-26 at halftime with a 13-11 edge in the second period. Jones kept Cumberland going with her fourth three-pointer.

The two teams played to a 9-9 third quarter and Cumberland hung on with a 36-35 tally.

The Pirates then put the game away in the final period as Alysa Dittamore came to life. After scoring on five points through the first three quarters, Dittamore hit two regular baskets and was four of six at the line for eight points. Jude Miller put in a three-pointer and a regular basket for five and Jade Carr added four.

Four players hit double figures for the winners in pretty even scoring. Jones led the way with 14 points on five field goals, four of those three-pointers. Dittamore, Carr and Miller added 13 points each.

At Toledo

At Louisville

North Clay put together an 18-13 opening half lead and had a 26-15 second half to beat Sandoval, 44-28 Thursday evening.

The Cardinals moved into a 10-5 opening quarter as Avery Romack connected on eight of her team’s 10 points with two three-pointers and a regular basket.

North Clay held an 18-13 halftime lead. The Cardinals then had a 16-8 third quarter surge as Violet Price hit two three-pointers and a regular basket for eight and Ava Fleener added two baskets.

The Cardinals had a 26-15 second half run. North Clay was led by Price with 14 points on four field goals, two of those three-pointers, and four of four at the line. Romack chipped in with 10 and Fleener added eight.

At Louisville

At Highland

Highland played host to Effingham St. Anthony and picked up a 55-32 win Thursday evening.

Highland tore out to a 17-5 opening quarter lead and led 30-14 at halftime and 43-14 going into the final quarter.

One player scored in double figures for St. Anthony as Nancy Ruholl put in six baskets, two from the three-point line, and was one of two with free throws for 15. Addie Lauritzen pulled down nine rebounds.

Highland finished with 10 three-pointers led by Sophie Schroeder with three and Mady Holcmann, Ari Nanney and Carley Lindsey with two each.

St. Anthony is back in action Saturday against Pana beginning at 3:30 p.m.

Newton edged out to a 13-12 opening quarter lead and led 25-23 at halftime over Richland County.

But the Tigers came back with a 33-18 second half for a 56-43 victory over Newton.

Kelysse Weiler scored 25 to lead the Tigers while Aliyah Flittner added 17.

Newton was led by Maddie Brummer and Alani Bergbower with 10 each. Bergbower hit three three-pointers and was one of two at the line while Brummer scored three baskets and was four of five at the line.

Grace Schumacher led in rebounds with seven. Bergbower and G. Schumacher had three assists each. Claire Probst led in steals with three.

Newton drops to 15-9 on the season.

Richland County was a 33-29 winner in junior varsity action. Gentry led Newton with 10 points.
