 Eighth-Grade Boys Basketball Regionals — January 24 Results

Eighth-grade boys basketball regionals got underway around the area Saturday. Following are the results:

Class 1A Effingham Sacred Heart Regional

Newton St. Thomas, Sigel St. Michael and Ramsey were opening round winners in the Sacred Heart Regional.

St. Thomas edged Altamont Lutheran, 40-37 in the first contest.

The second game went to St. Michael over Pana Sacred Heart, 31-26.

The final game of the day saw Ramsey beating Mulberry Grove, 49-33.

The regional continues Tuesday with Effingham Sacred Heart against Newton St. Thomas at 6 p.m. followed by St. Michael taking on Ramsey at 6:15 p.m.

The winners advance to the championship game Wednesday at 6 p.m.

 

At Stewardson

Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City won the opener at the Class 8-2A Stewardson-Strasburg Regional Saturday.

CHBC won over Altamont, 35-29. The two teams were tied at 9-9 in the opening quarter. CHBC edged ahead 19-14 at halftime then had a 13-10 third quarter run.

Veteto scored 14 and Neu 11 for the winners.

CHBC was led by Thull with 13.

In the second contest, St. Elmo/Brownstown was a 37-22 winner over South Central.

SEB led 21-12 at halftime and finished strong with a 10-3 final quarter.

Miller led the winners with 17 points.

Smith led South Central with six.

In the third contest, Effingham St. Anthony downed North Clay, 45-17.

The Bullpups held a 24-6 halftime lead. Phillips led the way in scoring with 18 points.

North Clay was led by Ruholl with 10.

Stew-Stras and Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City meet at 6 p.m. Tuesday while St. Elmo/Brownstown and St. Anthony square off at 7:15.

The winners advance to a 6 p.m. championship game Wednesday at 6 p.m.

At Stewardson

At Casey

Neoga was the lone team that advanced in the Class 8-2A Casey-Westfield Regional.

In the opener, Casey-Westfield trounced Oblong, 55-29. Neoga then edged Paris Crestwood, 32-30.

Villa Grove easily won over Arcola, 43-13.

Hutsonville then defeated Dieterich 28-23.

Hutsonville took an 11-8 opening quarter lead and led 20-12 at halftime. Dieterich came back with an 11-8 second half but couldn’t make up that first half.

Dieterich was led by Brody Niemerg with 12 points and Chase Uthell with seven.

Casey-Westfield and Neoga meet at 6 p.m. Wednesday followed by Villa Grove against Hutsonville at 7.

Class 8-2A Casey-Westfield Regional

Class 7-3A Robinson Nuttall Regional

Teutopolis was a big winner over Red Hill (Bridgeport), 54-23 in the opening game.

In the second game, Robinson Nuttall downed Jasper County, 54-25.

Robinson Nutall ran out to a 19-5 opening quarter lead and never looked back.

Alex Keller led Jasper County with nine points while Jacob Guzman added eight. Trace Cornwell was the top rebounder. Alex Keller the top defender and Grant Frichtl the top passer.

Jasper County finished the season at 7-15.

Lawrenceville Parkview downed Cumberland, 50-18.

Teutopolis will now meet Marshall at 6 p.m. Tuesday followed by Robinson Nuttall against Lawrenceville Parkview at 7:15.

Class 7-3A Robinson Nuttall Regional

Class 8-4A Effingham Regional

Rochester and Effingham advanced in the Effingham Regional Saturday.

Rochester won 46-31 over Taylorville in the first contest.

Effingham then downed Mattoon 55-47 in overtime.

The Mustangs ran out to a 13-5 opening quarter lead as Thompson hit a three-pointer and Beck and O’Dell scored four points each.

Thompson then went on a 10-point tear in the second quarter and Effingham led 25-11.

But Mattoon came back with a 14-6 third quarter to to pull ahead 31-25. The Mustangs fought back with a 16-10 fourth quarter to tie the score and send the game into overtime.

In the overtime, Effingham went on a 14-6 run for the victory.

Thompson led the Mustangs with 21 points while Beck added 13 and Bridges was at nine.

Rochester and Stephen Decatur will meet Tuesday at 6 p.m. followed by Effingham taking on Mount Zion at 7:45.

The winners advance to the championship game Wednesday at 6 p.m.
