 Cumberland Wins National Trail Conference Girls Tournament Championship

Cumberland High School is the National Trail Conference Girls Basketball Tournament champion.

The Pirates handed Brownstown/St. Elmo a 44-33 loss in the title contest Saturday.

BSE ran out to a 17-11 opening quarter lead but Cumberland tied the score at 25-25 at halftime.

The Pirates then had a 13-6 third quarter and finished out with a 6-2 final period.

Raegan Jones led the way for the Pirates with 15 points on five three-pointers. Jude Miller chipped in with 14 on four field goals, one a three-pointer, and five ofsix at the line.

Brownstown/St. Elmo was led by Dayana Haslett with 12 points on five field goals, two of those three-pointers.

In the third place contest, Effingham St. Anthony handled Altamont to the tune of 58-20.

The Bulldogs ran out to a 27-16 halftime lead and finished with a 31-4 second half.

Nancy Ruholl went on a run, scoring four three-pointers and was a perfect six of six at the line for 30 points. Also in double figures was Addie Lauritzen with 12.

Altamont was led by Sophia Long with six points on two field goals and two of two at the line.

Neoga finished in fifth place with a 37-35 edge over Dieterich.

The two teams were tied at 8-8 after the opening quarter and 20-20 at halftime. But Dieterich moved into a one-point lead heading into the final quarter. That’s when Neoga came back with a 12-9 run to pull out the two-point victory.

Lola Hartke led the winners with 11 points on four field goals and three of five at the line. Chloe Frankie added nine.

Dieterich was led by Addison Miller with 10 on three field goals, two of those three-pointers, and two of two at the line.

Seventh place went to North Clay against South Central, 29-19.

The score was tied at 11-11 at halftime. North Clay then moved ahead by a point in the third quarter and finished with a strong final quarter 11-2 run.

Violet Price and Eversyn Thompson led the Cardinals with eight points each.

South Central was led by Baylee Brown with 10.

Named to the National Trail All-Conference Team were Most Valuable Player Jude Miller (Cumberland), Dayana Haslett (BSE), Nancy Ruholl (St. Anthony), Madi Miller (BSE), Alysa Dittamore (Cumberland), Ella Nelson (Altamont), Addie Lauritzen (St. Anthony), Chloe Frankie (Neoga), Addie Sasse (BSE), Addison Miller (Dieterich), Jade Carr (Cumberland) and Violet Price (North Clay)
