Effingham Sacred Heart edged Cumberland 29-28 in eighth-grade boys basketball Wednesday evening.

The Shamrocks broke a 7-7 opening quarter tie with an 8-6 second quarter then held off Cumberland in the final period.

Gabe Traub led the winners with 18 points.

Cumberland was led by Miles with 11.

Sacred Heart is back in action Thursday at Neoga.

At Dieterich

Dieterich and St. Elmo/Brownstown each picked up a win Tuesday evening.

Dieterich edged SEB 35-31 in the seventh-grade game. SEB held an 11-4 opening quarter lead but Dieterich came back with a 15-0 second quarter run to pull ahead and never looked back.

Dieterich was led by Chase Bohnhoff with 17 points and Brock Koester with 12.

St. Elmo/Brownstown was led by J. Schaub with 17 and J. Morrison with nine.

In the eighth-grade contest, St. Elmo/Brownstown moved into an 11-2 opening quarter lead and pounded Dieterich 42-17.

Schaub led the winners with 18 points.

Dieterich was led by Brody Niemerg with eight.

At Cowden

Sigel St. Michael and Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City split victories Tuesday evening.

St. Michael was a 37-35 winner in overtime in the seventh-grade game.

The Sharpshooters held a 10-6 halftime lead and led 26-19 lead going into the final quarter. CHBC mounted a comeback with an 11-4 run, sending the contest into overtime.

Kreke led St. Michael with 14 points and Deters added 11.

CHBC was led by Tyce Kircher and Elliot Thull with 11 each.

In the eighth-grade game, Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City won 43-35 with a 12-3 opening quarter run. The winners led 26-10 at halftime.

Lane Reed score 12 for the winners while Drake Thull added 10.

St. Michael was led by three players in double figures. Walk led with 12 while Kreke added 11 and Hille 10.
