PHILADELPHIA – No. 20 Illinois opened the new year with a 73-65 Big Ten road win over Penn State at The Palestra on Saturday night.
Four Fighting Illini scored in double-figures led by 18 points from senior G Kylan Boswell and a 13-point, 10-rebound double-double from freshman F David Mirkovic. Freshman G Keaton Wagler battled through foul trouble to post 16 points and junior G Andrej Stojakovic chipped in with 12 points in the win.
Junior F/C Zvonimir Ivisic joined Mirkovic in double-digit rebounds with 10 of his own, as the Illini posted a 48-37 edge on the glass. Ivisic also made an impact on the defensive end where he posted five of the Illini’s six blocked shots.
Illinois (11-3, 2-1 B1G) never trailed in the contest, storming out of the gate to build a 13-3 lead less than five minutes into the contest. After Penn State (9-5, 0-3) pulled within four, 17-13, the Illini opened up their largest lead of the first half with a 10-0 run to stake to a 27-13 advantage with 8:50 to play. The Illini went into the locker room leading by that same margin, 40-26.
Early in the second half, Wagler was called for his fourth personal foul and Penn State slowly chipped away at the deficit with the Illini’s leading scorer on the bench. The Nittany Lions eventually pulled back within single digits, 46-37, at the 16:32 mark of the second period.
With the lead cut to eight points, 57-49, at the 7:27 mark, the Illini mounted another 7-0 run to the Orange and Blue’s largest lead of the game to 15 points, 64-49, with 5:24 to play.
Down the stretch, the Illini hit 9-of-10 free-throws over the final five minutes to finish 23-of-28 from the stripe for the game and close out the road win.
Next up, Illinois hosts its first Big Ten contest of 2026 on Thursday vs. Rutgers at State Farm Center. Tipoff between the Fighting Illini and the Scarlet Knights is set for 7:30 p.m. CT on Big Ten Network.

Kylan Boswell scored a game-high 18 points, including a pair of 3-pointers and a 6-for-6 effort from the free-throw line.
