TEUTOPOLIS — St. Anthony, Newton and Teutopolis competed in the Effingham/Teutopolis Boys Christmas Classic at Teutopolis High School Monday.
St. Anthony opened the area team’s games with a 65-41 victory over Chicago Brooks.
The Bulldogs moved into a 19-10 opening quarter lead and led 32-20 at halftime. St. Anthony came roaring out in the third quarter with a 19-8 run and went on for the win.
Miles Waldhoff led the victory with 23 points on 10 field goals and 17 attempts, two of those from three-point range, and one of two at the line.
Also in double figures was Keenan Griffith with 15.
The Bulldogs connected on 53 percent from the field and were 67 percent at the free throw line with 20 of 26. St. Anthony connected on nine three-pointers led by Griffith with five and Waldhoff with two.
Jonny Gannaway led the Bulldogs in rebounds with eight.
Brooks was led by Elijah Curl with 11 points. Brendan Phillips led in rebounds with five.
Newton fell to Oregon, 54-48.
The Eagles ran out to a 12-7 opening quarter lead. But, Oregon came back with a 21-9 second quarter run to lead 28-21 at halftime. The two teams played to an 11-11 third quarter.
Newton came back witih a 16-15 final period edge but it was too little to make up that second quarter deficit.
Kody Bergbower was the lone Newton player to hit double figures. He connected on four field goals, one a three-pointer, and was four of five at the line for 13 points. Hayden Mulvey chipped in with nine.
Oregon was led by Brian Wallace with 12 points.
Teutopolis trailed Pleasant Plains by a 14-7 count after the opening inning. But the Wooden Shoes weren’t down long as they came back with a 17-4 second period to lead 24-18 at halftime and that was the game as the Shoes had a 33-9 second half.
Landyn Thoele took the lead in scoring with 21 points. He connected on nine field goals and three free throws. Isaac McWhorter was next up with 10 points and led in rebounds with six.
In other games at Teutopolis Monday, Champaign Centennial beat Charleston 74-64, Lawrenceville won over Dixon 64-36, Lutheran North edged Mattoon 57-53 and Tolono Unity bounced Central A&M 80-49
Today’s schedule puts Newton against Pleasant Plains at Teutopolis at 11 a.m. followed by St. Anthony taking on Champaign Centennial at 12:30 p.m. Teutopolis will face Oregon at 2 p.m.
