 Newton Girls Second at Merry Mule Tourney, Neoga To Play For Fifth Place At Monticello

FAIRFIELD — Newton High School finished second at the Merry Mule Girls Basketball Tournament during the weekend.

Fairfield edged out to a 14-11 opening quarter lead on Newton in the title contest Saturday.

The Mules led 27-23 at halftime. Newton got untracked in the final quarter but couldn’t make up the deficit.

Two players finished in double figures for the Eagles. Grace Schumacher scored 15 on four field goals and seven of nine at the line. Izzy Meinhart chipped in with 13.

Newton opened with a 64-22 win over Wayne City Friday.

The Eagles ripped out to a 22-6 opening quarter lead and never looked back.

Allie Hermann led with 15 points while Alani Bergbower added 12.

Newton trounced Mount Vernon, Ind., 56-19. The Eagles held a 38-8 halftime lead.

Hermann led the way with 17 points on six field goals and four of four at the line. Bergbower chipped in with 12 and Meinhart added 10.

Newton edged Edwards County, 57-55 in the third contest.

Edwards County ran out to an 18-5 opening quarter lead but Newton came back within 28-25 at halftime then had a 19-8 third period and went on for the victory.

G. Schumacher, Bergbower and Meinhart all tallied 13 points each in even scoring.

At Monticello

Neoga claimed one victory and fell twice in the Monticello Holiday Tournament during the weekend.

Neoga fell to host Monticello 55-25 in the opening game Friday.

Monticello ran out to a 21-8 opening quarter lead and led 36-17 at halftime. The winners had a 17-5 third quarter run.

Neoga was led by Madi Frankie with seven points.

In the second game Friday, Tri-Valley trounced Neoga, 75-22. Tri-Valley held a 41-11 halftime lead.

Neoga was led in scoring by Keeli McKay with seven points.

Neoga will now face Warrensburg-Latham for fifth place today.
