 Windsor/Stew-Stras, Hillsboro Win Openers at St. Elmo Holiday Tournament, N. Clay Wins At Wayne City

ST. ELMO — Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg downed Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City 78-64 in the 65th Annual St. Elmo Holiday Boys Basketball Tournament Tuesday evening.

Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City moved into a 19-16 opening quarter lead as Howell scored a basket and was six of six at the free throw line for eight points while Griffin Vaughn added seven points.

But Windsor/Stew-Stras came back with a slight 16-14 second period as Auston Rahn hit two three-pointers for six. CHBC still held a 33-32 halftime lead.

Then in the third period,  the Hatchets broke loose with a 27-9 run. Brody Bible scored eight points while Wyatt Wetherell tallied six.

G. Vaughn kept CHBC in the game with two three-pointers and a regular basket for eight of the nine points.

CHBC came back with a 22-19 third quarter run as Clive Schlanser hit three baskets and was five of seven at the line for 11 points.

But the Hatchets’ Wyatt Wetherell, who hadn’t scored in the opening half, put in 12 points in the final period after scoring six in the third quarter.

Wetherell finished with 18 points on six field goals, three from beyond the arc. Also in double figures were Sayers with 15, Brody Bible with 12 and Auston Rah with 12.

The Bobcats were led by G. Vaughn with 25 points on eight field goals, five of those from three-point range, and four of four at the line, Schlanser with 16 and Howell with 11.

In the opening game of the evening, Hillsboro won over Mulberry Grove, 60-32.

Windsor/Stew-Stras will now meet Hillsboro at 7:45 p.m. Thursday. Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City will face Mulberry Grove at 6:15 p.m. Thursday.

At Wayne City

Three games were contested in the Conrad Allen Tournament Tuesday evening.

North Clay was an 84-51 winner over Thompsonville. The big news came when senior Cody Zimdars became the All-Time leading scorer in North Clay boys basketball history, passing IBCA Hall of Famer Dick Tolliver (Class of 1961) who finished with 1,526 career points.

Crab Orchard downed Sandoval 59-35 and Wayne City defeated Grayville 74-60.

Tonight’s games feature Grayville against Crab Orchard at 6 and Wayne City meeting Sandoval at 7:30.

North Clay is 2-0 in Pool B followed by Cisne 1-1, Edwards County 1-1 and Thompsonville 0-2.

In Pool A, Wayne City is 2-0, Webber Township 2-0, Crab Orchard is 1-2 and Sandoval 1-2,
