 Altamont, Cumberland Capture Girls Basketball Wins, Newton, S. Central Drop Losses

LOUISVILLE — Altamont trailed North Clay after the opening quarter but came roaring back with a 15-5 second period and went on for a 38-22 win in girls high school basketball Monday evening.

The Cardinals moved into a 5-4 lead as Avery Romack put in a basket and a free throw and Brooklyn Phillips added a bucket.

But Altamont didn’t mess around. The Indians went on a run when Ella Nelson connected on a three-pointer and two field goals for seven and Avery Aldrich and Kennedi Schultz added three points each. The Indians held a 19-10 halftime lead.

Altamont continued on with a 14-5 third period run. Sophia Long scored six points.

North Clay had a slight 7-5 final period edge. Clara Hagen scored five of her team’s seven points.

Nelson led Altamont with nine points while Long and Schultz added eight each and Aldrich seven. The Indians are 1-1 in the National Trail Conference and 5-5 overall. The Indians return to action Thursday against Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City.

North Clay was led by Hagen with seven. The Cardinals are 0-4 in the NTC, 0-7 overall.

At Louisville

At Toledo

Cumberland handed Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg a 66-37 loss in Monday evening play.

The Pirates ran out to a 25-5 opening quarter lead as Jude Miller connected on three regular baskets and a three-pointer for nine while Alysa Dittamore hit four baskets for eight and Jade Carr connected on two three-pointers and a regular basket for eight.

The lead went to 39-15 at halftime. Jones put in two more three-pointers.

Miller hit seven field goals and was three of four at the line for 18 points while Dittamore added eight field goals for 16 and Carr five field goals, three of those from beyond the arc and two of two at the line for 15.

Windsor/Stew-Stras was led by Clarissa Johnson with eight points on three field goals, two from three-point range. Kendra Hayes and Cameron Carey chipped in with seven each.

Newton edged out to a 12-11 opening quarter lead and led 22-18 at halftime. But Salem came back in the second half with a 24-17 run to pull out a 42-39 victory Monday evening.

Newton had two players in double figures. Grace Schumacher and Allie Herrmann hit three field goals and four free throws each for 10 points.

Claire Probst led the Eagles in rebounds with eight. G. Schumacher, Hermann and Probst had two steals each.

Newton drops to 6-4 on the season.

Newton’s junior varsity also fell, 43-24. Gentry led the Eagles with nine points as the team dropped to 3-4 on the season.

Newton is back in action Thursday at Teutopolis.

At Woodlawn

Woodlawn played host to South Central in a non-conference matchup Monday evening and claimed a 55-28 win.

Woodlawn held a 23-17 halftime lead then broke the game wide open with a 26-5 third period run.

South Central was led by Perci Reid with eight points, Baylee Brown with seven and Lauren Johnson with seven.
