 Dieterich Advances In Class 8-2A Girls State Basketball Tourney

HAVANA — Dieterich Junior High School advanced in the Class 8-2A State Girls Basketball Tournament with a victory Monday evening.

The Roadrunners handed Spring Valley Kennedy a 35-21 loss at Havana Junior High School.

Dieterich moved into a 10-8 opening quarter lead but Spring Valley Kennedy came back with a slight 8-7 second period to pull within 17-16 at halftime.

Dieterich then went on a tear, outscoring Spring Valley 10-2 in the third quarter and put the game away.

Two players hit double figures for the winners. Lydia Kreke led the way with 14 points while Mya Ohnesorge added 10.

Kreke led in rebounds with five and had three steals. Emery Bill also had three steals. Mackenzie Roedl and Emma Williams had two assists each.

In other first round games, Springfield Christian defeated Sidell Salt Fork 33-15, Mt. Sterling Brown County won over Bloomington Corpus Christi 34-18 and Glasford Illini Bluffs downed Kankakee Bishop McNamara 39-26.

Dieterich advances to the semifinals with a 23-2 record and will now face Springfield Christian (20-3) at 5 p.m. today. In the other contest, Mt. Sterling Brown County (24-2) faces Glasford Illini Bluffs (20-1) at 6:30.

The winners advance to the championship game Thursday at 7:30 p.m. while the losers will meet for third place at 6 p.m.
