 Altamont, Dieterich, Cumberland Win, North Clay Captures Two Victories In Boys H.S. Basketball, T-town Loses

ALTAMONT — Altamont High School went on an opening quarter tear and never looked back in a 65-22 National Trail Conference victory over South Central Friday evening in boys basketball.

The Indians led 18-2 after the opening quarter and 38-11 at halftime. Parker Bell and Jacob Johnson scored six points each while Cooper McManaway put in a three-pointer.

McManaway hit two more three-pointers in the second quarter while Zaine Miller also nailed two three-pointers and a free throw.

Three players finished in double digits for the Indians. Miller led the way with 16 points on six field goals, three from beyond the arc, and one of one at the line. Jacob Johnson added 15 while McManaway finished with 14.

Altamont improved to 1-1 in the NTC and 3-2 overall.

South Central was led by Hudson Moore with 12 points on six field goals.

Altamont also was a winner in the junior varsity matchup, 64-29. Blake Berg had 15, Calvin Bannister 14 and Hayden Bridges 13.

South Central was led by Draven Gillespie with eight.

At Dieterich

Dieterich played host to Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City and sent the Bobcats home with a 72-48 loss Friday.

The Movin’ Maroons and Bobcats were tied at 16-16 after the opening quarter. Jackson Icenogle scored nine points while Ezara Cook added five for the Maroons. CHBC was led by Howell with five points.

In the second quarter, Dieterich edged ahead 34-28. Cook added seven more points while Brock NIemerg chipped in with five.

Griffin Vaughn led CHBC with two three-pointers and a two for eight.

Dieterich had a 13-12 third quarter edge and finished off with some big shooting from the free throw line in the final quarter, hitting nine of 14.

Three players finished in double figures for the Maroons. Icenogle hit seven field goals and was six of seven at the line for 21 points. Niemerg and Cook added 20 each.

CHBC was led by Vaughn with 20 on eight field goals, four from three-point range, and Howell with 14.

At Mattoon

Cumberland and Neoga squared off in a game played at Lake Land College Friday evening.

The Pirates came out a 47-28 winner. Cumberland moved into a 13-6 opening quarter lead as J. Miller hit a three-pointer, two baskets and a free throw for eight while J. Carr added a three-pointer.

Neoga had only one basket, a two-pointer by E. Frankie.

Neoga came back with a 9-2 second period run to tie the score at 15-15 at halftime.

But Cumberland got going again with a 19-7 third quarter as J. Miller hit four regular baskets and a three for 11 points while J. Carr chipped in with a three.

J. Miller finished with 26 points on nine field goals, two from three-point range, and six of seven at the line. A. Dittamore also scored in double figures with 12.

Neoga was led by Henderson with 14 points.

Bloomington Central Catholic handed Teutopolis a 56-49 loss in competition Friday evening.

BCC headed out to a 12-6 opening quarter lead and led 29-18 at halftime. T-town came back in the final quarter with a 20-14 run but couldn’t make up those first three quarters.

Landyn Thoele led the way with 16 points on seven field goals and two of four at the line. Also in double figures was Isaac McWhorter with 11.

In junior varsity play, T-town won 66-27. Kendal Mette led with 12 points and Teagan Pals added 11 for the Shoes.

At Louisville

North Clay fended off Newton and held on for a 70-68 victory Friday evening.

North Clay moved ahead 17-10 in the opening quarter and led 31-25 at halftime. Both teams scored 16 in the third period. Newton then made a run only to fall short.

Four players hit double digits for the Cardinals. Carder Walden led with 22 points on seven field goals, four from three-point range, and four of four at the line. Bayers added 19 while Atwood had 12 and Griffy 11.

North Clay improved to 4-1 overall.

In other games, Webber Township trounced Sandoval 81-30, Wayne City defeated Crab Orchard 75-32 and Edwards County downed Thompsonville 54-18.

Today’s games feature Webber Township against Crab Orchard at 5:30, Sandoval meeting Grayville at 7 and Cisne taking on Edwards County at 8:30.

North Clay returns to action Tuesday in a 5:30 p.m. contest against Thompsonville.

At Wayne City

North Clay won its opening contest at the Conrad Allen Tournament Saturday.

The Cardinals defeated Cisne 84-67 in the first game of the day. North Clay ran out to a 27-15 lead behind 10 points by Mason Byers and seven points by Cody Zimdars.

North Clay held a 43-33 halftime lea and led 67-33 going into the final quarter then had a 17-15 edge for the winning margin.

Byers tallied 26 points on 10 field goals and six of 11 at the line. Zimdars chipped in with 19 while Carder Waldon had 16, Kade Atwood 12 and Lucas Griffey 11.

In other games, Webber Township won over Sandoval, 81-30, Wayne City downed Crab Orchard 75-32 and Edwards County defeated Thompsonville 54-18.
