 St. A, Dieterich, C’land, Altamont, CHBC Win, SEB, Newton Claim Two Victories In Boys Basketball

Effingham St. Anthony broke a 13-13 opening quarter tie with a 19-14 second period and went on for a 71-63 victory over North Clay in boys high school basketball action Friday evening.

Myles Waldhoff connected on a three-pointer and regular basket in that run for five points.

Waldhoff then went on a 10-point tear in the second period, hitting two more three-pointers and two regular baskets as the Bulldogs held a 32-27 halftime lead.

Mason Byers kept North Clay going with six opening quarter points and came back with six in the second period for 12 at halftime.

St. Anthony then went on a 22-17 third period run as Waldhoff hit a regular basket, a three and two free throws. Keenan Griffith put in a three and a regular basket for five.

The Cardinals made it interesting with a final 19-17 third period. Byers added on six more points and Atwood scored five with a three-pointer and two free throws but it was too little.

Waldhoff led the Bulldogs with nine field goals, four from beyond the arc, and two of two at the line for 24 points. Also in double figures were Griffith with 14 and Aiden Lauritzen with 12.

North Clay was led by Byers with 21 on nine field goals and three of five at the line, Griffy with 14 and Zimdars with 12.

In junior varsity action, St. Anthony was a 69-22 winner. The Bulldogs were led by four players in double figures. Cooper Sehy tallied 14, Blake Verdeyen 13, Will Vonderheide 10 and Connor Storm 10

North Clay was led by Leonberger with seven.

In freshman/sophomore play, St. Anthony won 48-35.

Logan Gowen and Charlie Hoene scored 12 each while Charlie Bierman added 10. Hoene hit four three-pointers in the third quarter.

North Clay was led by Leonberger with 17 on eight field goals and a free throw.

At St. Elmo

St. Elmo/Brownstown edged Neoga in National Trail Conference action, 57-53 Friday evening.

SEB moved into a 30-25 halftime lead. Neoga came back with a slight 28-27 edge in the second half.

Graiden Wilhour led the winners with 22 points on seven field goals, three from beyond the arc, and five of six at the line. Also hitting double digitis were Lucas Powell with 14 and Jayden Hughett with 11.

Neoga was led by Roy with 16.

In a Saturday contest, St. Elmo/Brownstown won in overtime 60-56 over Tri-County.

The Eagles held a 21-13 opening quarter lead and led 33-25 at halftime. Tri-County came back with a 14-8 third period and had an 11-9 final quarter to tie the score at 50-50, sending the contest into overtime.

G. Wilhour scored 14 points on six field goals, one a three-pointer, and one of two at the line. Hughett added 12 points and R. Powell 10.

St. Elmo/Brownstown is 5-2 on the season.

At Strasburg

Dieterich edged ahead 15-10 over Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg and held a 21-18 halftime lead. The Maroons had a 16-6 third period and finished with a 51-36 win Friday evening.

Dieterich’s Ezra Cook hit a three-pointer and a regular basket for five points in that opening quarter.

Brock Niemerg took over in the third period, scoring eight points.

Niemerg finished with 16 to lead the winners on seven field goals and two of four at the line.

Also in double figures were Jackson Icenogle with 12, Cook with 11 and Bryce Bohnhoff with 10.

Windsor/Stew-Stras was led by Noah Vonderheide with nine on four field goals and one of two at the line.

The Hatchets fell to 4-2 on the season and 0-1 in the National Trail Conference.

In junior varsity play, Dieterich was a 44-30 winner.

Cumberland edged out to an early lead and went on for a 79-53 victory over Oblong/Palestine/Hutsonville Friday.

The Pirates led 37-27 at halftime and 67-40 going into the final quarter.

Chase Stewart and Cameron Roedl were the one-two scoring punch for the Pirates. Stewart hit seven field goals, all from three-point range, and was three of three at the line for 27 points. Roedl connected on nine field goals, five from three-point land, and was two of two at the line for 25 points. Isaac Venatta added 10 points.

The Pirates finishied with 12 from three-point range and were 12 of 18 at the line.

O/P/H had seven three-pointers.

Altamont pushed ahead 19-11 in the opening quarter and handed Vandalia a 60-43 loss in a non-conference matchup Friday evening.

Four players scored as Altamont moved into a 19-11 opening quarter lead. Kade Milleville hit two regular baskets and a three-pointer for seven while Parker Bell and Zaine Miller had a regular basket and a three-pointer each for five.

K. Milleville scored six in the second period 12-9 run as Altamont led 31-20 at halftime.

Vandalia came back with a 17-15 run to pull within 46-37 going into the final period. Altamont got back on track with a 14-6 final quarter.

K. Milleville led the way with 17 points on eight field goals, one a three-pointer. Miller added 14, Jacob Johnson 13 and Bell 13.

In the junior varsity contest, Altamont was a 52-16 winner. Kaiden Wolff led with 13 while Calvin Bannister and Carson Millville had a 10 each.

Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City celebrated homecoming in style with a 73-44 victory over Ramsey Friday evening.

The Bobcats stepped out to a 21-14 opening quarter lead and pushed that to 45-24 at halftime.

Three players finished in double figures for the winners. Clive Schlanser led the way with 24 points on seven field goals and 10 free throws. Also in double figures were Remington Howell with 18 and August Cosart with 12.

The Bobcats also claimed the junior varsity game, 52-20.

The varsity improved to 3-2 on the season and is 1-0 in Egyptian-Illini Conference action.

At Newton

Newton edged Paris 54-51 in Friday competition.

The Eagles trailed Paris 26-20 at halftime and 39-29 going into the final quarter. Newton then rallied with a 25-12 run to pull out the victory.

Kody Bergbower led the way with 18 points on seven field goals and four of five at the line. Hayden Mulvey chipped in with 17 on six field goals that included two three-pointers and was three of four at the line.

The Eagles finished with eight three-pointers in the game, two each by Mulvey, Eli Wolf and Drake Wolf.

Newton won the junior varsity game, 54-35.

Newton plays host to Timothy Christian Elmhurst Saturday. The Eagles came out 40-39 winners.

Only one player finished in double figures. Mulvey led the way with 16 points on six field goals, four of those from three-point range.

Also in double figures was Kody Bergbower with 10.

The Eagles are now 3-1 on the season and back in action Tuesday against Altamont.
