COWDEN — Dieterich was the lone area team to capture an opening round victory in the Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City Girls Basketball Tournament Tuesday evening.
The Movin’ Maroons defeated Ramsey by a 46-34 count. Dieterich held a 14-9 opening quarter lead as both Lena Goebel and Addison Miller scored five points each.
The second period was low scoring as the Maroons had an 8-5 edge to lead 22-14 at halftime.
In the third quarter, Ramsey mounted a comeback but Dieterich had a slight 11-10 edge. Cassidy Goebel scored five points while L. Goebel added four.
In the final period, Dieterich put the game away with a 13-10 run. Miller finished with two baskets and three free throws for seven points in the period.
Miller led the way with 12 points on four field goals, one a three-pointer, and three of four at the line. L. Goebel added 11 on four baskets and three of four at the line.
In the second contest, Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City fell to Sandoval by a 33-24 score.
Sandoval took a 9-1 opening quarter lead but CHBC came roaring back with a 10-2 second period to lead 18-11 at halftime. Lena Bowlin led the way with four points.
But the Blackhawks put together a 13-7 third period run to move ahead 24-18 and finished out with a 9-6 final quarter for the victory.
CHBC was led by Ethel Stuckemeyer with eight points on three field goals and two of four at the line.
In the third contest, Shelbyville was a 53-39 winner over North Clay.
Shelbyville edged out to a 17-15 opening quarter lead. The Cardinals then tied the score for a 25-25 halftime tally. Shelbyville came back with a 10-6 third period run and finished strong with a 14-8 final quarter. Kenzie Jones scored eight points in that final period run for Shelbyville.
Jones finished with 26 points for the Rams, hitting seven field goals, one a three-pointer, and was 11 of 19 at the line.
North Clay was led by Violet Price with nine points on four field goals and a free throw and Clara Hagen with eight.
