 Cumberland Beats Newton At Own Boys Tourney, South Central Wins At M. Grove, Cerro Gordo Scores

TOLEDO — Newton and Cumberland squared off in the Cumberland Boys Basketball Turkey Tournament Tuesday evening.

The host squad claimed the 43-38 victory over Newton. The Pirates ran out to a 17-4 opening quarter lead, setting the pace for the contest. Cameron Roedl scored seven points in the quarter while Isaac Venatta tallied six.

The lead went to 30-13 at halftime. Zack Harmon took over the scoring duties for the Pirates, finishing with five points in the second quarter.

Newton came roaring back in the second half, pulling within 34-21 with an 8-4 run in the third quarter as Kody Bergbower got on track with a basket and five of eight at the line. for eight points.

The Eagles continued on with a 17-9 final period run. Bergbower hit a basket and was five of six at the line while Hayden Mulvey and Eli Wolf connected on a three-pointer each.

But the Pirates held on for the victory. Chase Stewart scored on a three-pointer while the Pirates hit six of eight free throws. Reed Miller put in three of four while Kade McMechan hit two

Venatta was the lone player in double figures for Cumberland with 10.

Newton was led by Bergbower with 20 on five field goals and 10 of 14 at the line.

In the opening game of the evening, Casey-Westfield was a 55-26 winner over Okaw Valley.

Cumberland and Casey-Westfield advance in the winner’s bracket. Newton and Okaw Valley drop into the opposite side of the bracket.

There are no games scheduled for tonight or Thursday. Action continues Friday with Okaw Valley against Newton at 3 p.m. and Vandalia meeting Marshall at 4:30 in consolation bracket play. In the winner bracket, Cumberland faces Casey-Westfield at 6 p.m. followed by North Clay against  Dieterich at 7:30.

The winners will meet for the championship Saturday at 6 p.m. The third place contest will be held at 4:30 p.m. The seventh place game will be played at 1:30 while the consolation championship is scheduled for 3.

At Mulberry Grove

South Central captured a 59-49 win over Ramsey in game six of the Mulberry Grove Turkey Tournament Tuesday evening.

The Cougars edged out to a 16-11 opening quarter lead. Westin Neilson got them off to the lead, hitting three trifectas.

The Cougars moved ahead by 16 but the Rams came back to pull within nine at halftime, 34-25.

South Central then had a 9-8 edge in the third quarter, leading by 10. The Rams came roaring back within three points in the final period but South Central ended up with the 10-point victory.

Westin Neilson had a big scoring game with 32 points. Hudson Moore chipped in with nine.

Ramsey was led by Max Reiss with 16 points.

In other games, Father McGivney defeated Lebanon 52-23 and Maryville Christian won over Mount Olive 79-31.

The tournament continues tonight as St. Elmo/Brownstown meets Father McGivney at 5:15 p.m. followed by Ramsey against Mount Olive at 6:45 and Mulberry Grove taking on Lebanon at 8:15.

At Cerro Gordo

Only two scores were reported at the Cerro Gordo Boys Basketball Tournament Tuesday evening.

Argenta-Oreana won over Heritage 60-55 and Heyworth edged Unity Christian 64-62.

No scores were reported for University High against Hartsburg-Emden and Fisher vs. Warrensburg-Latham.

The tournament continues tonight. In the junior high gym, Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City will meet Heyworth at 6 followed by Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg against Heritage at 7:30.

In the high school gym, University High faces LeRoy at 4:30, St. Thomas More takes on Fisher at 6 and Hartsburg-Emden meets Cerro Gordo-Bement at 7:30.
