 Newton Beats Altamont, C’land, Dieterich Win, St. Anthony, CHBC Drop Losses In High School Baseball

ALTAMONT — Banging out 10 hits, drawing nine walks and taking advantage of three errors, Newton High School put together a 13-5 victory over Altamont Monday.

The Eagles moved ahead 2-0 in the third inning then pushed that to 5-2 in the sixth and finished with a 5-1 final inning.

Newton’s bats were cracking with 10 hits led by Dominic Baltzell with two singles, a double and three RBI. Maddox Horner with a single and triple and Quincy Fulton with two singles and an RBI. Drake Wolf added a single and four RBI, Reed Tharp a single and an RBI and David Ferguson with an RBI.

Meanwhile, Gavin Meinhart went the first four innings on the mound. He gave up two runs on three hits, five walks and struck out three for the win.

Zaine Miller had a double and drove in two runs for Altamont while Cooper McManaway added a double. Reed Stuemke hit two singles and drove in a run while Carson Milleville finished with a single and an RBI and Parker Bell added an RBI.

At Paris

Cumberland edged Paris by a 7-6 tally in Monday baseball action.

The Pirates moved into a 3-2 opening inning lead and tallied singles runs in the third and fourth to lead 5-3.

Paris came back to knot the score at 5-5 in the bottom of the fifth. But Cumberland rallied to push across two runs in the sixth.

The Tigers attempted another comeback in the bottom of the seventh only to fall a run short.

Kade McMechan led the way for the Pirates with a double and an RBI while Lance Lock had two singles and two RBI. Adyn Heuerman added two RBI and Hudson McElravy finished with a single and an RBI.

Miller went four innings on the mound. He gave up three runs on five hits, four walks and struck out four. McMechan came on to finish the final three innings, giving up three runs on one hit, two walks and striking out two.

At Paris

At Dieterich

Neither Dieterich nor Flora scored through the first five innings of their game Monday.

But the sixth was where all the runs were tallied. Flora moved ahead 2-0 in the top of the sixth only to see Dieterich come roaring back with 12 runs in the bottom of the frame to end the game via the 10-run rule by a 12-2 tally..

The Maroons finished with 13 hits in the game. Gavin Meinhart had the lone extra baseball hit of the contest with a double. He also added a single and finished with an RBI. Dominic Ashley had three singles and drove in two runs while Andrew Hall chipped in with two singles and two RBI. Justin Boerngen added two singles and an RBI.

Alex Schottman had a single and three RBI and Carson Baxter a single and two RBI.

Jackson Icenogle was the winning pitcher. He went five innings, giving up two runs on four hits, six walks and striking out six.

At Dieterich

At Effingham

Two Bulldog teams squared off as Mahomet-Seymour traveled to Effingham St. Anthony and claimed a 9-5 victory Monday.

The two were tied at 2-2 after the opening inning. Mahomet-Seymour then moved into a 4-2 lead in the fourth.

St. Anthony came back with three in the bottom of the fifth to lead 5-4. That’s the way things stayed until the top of the seventh when Mahomet-Seymour won with five runs.

St. Anthony outhit Mahomet-Seymour by a 6-4 count but had three errors.

Aiden Lauritzen had a single and double. Alex Mayer added a single and three RBI. Will Bierman finished with an RBI.

In a junior varsity game, St. Anthony was an 11-4 winner over Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg.

Connor Storm had two doubles and drove in three runs while Andrew Wagner had a single, double and two RBI. Charlie Hoene added a single and an RBI, M. Fearday had two singles, Nick Roewe a double and James Trupiano an RBI.

Windsor/Stew-Stras was led by Derk Friese with a single and double, Jones a double and Holland a single and an RBI.

At Effingham

Vandalia played host to Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City and sent the Bobcats home with a 6-2 loss Monday.

The Vandals edged ahead 1-0 in the first then had a three-run second and tacked on single runs in the third and fifth for the victory.

CHBC finished with five hits led by Isaac Wells and Zach Bennett with a double each. Isaac Miller added an RBI.
