Cumberland High School’s Grady Jones tossed a no-hitter Friday but he didn’t win the high school baseball contest as Newton pulled out a 1-0 victory.
Jones went all seven innings. He struck out 11 and allowed only one walk.
The winning run came in the seventh. Newton’s Dominic Baltzell reached base on a dropped third strike. He advanced to second on a ground ball and went to third on a balk. With two outs he scored on an error.
The Pirates finished with six hits but committed three errors. Grady Jones, Maddox Miller, Hudson McElravy, Lance Lock, Evan Davis and Bryson Weber had a single each for the Pirates.
