SALEM — Effingham St. Anthony held off Salem for a 5-4 victory in high school baseball action Monday.

The Wildcats moved into a 1-0 lead in the second inning. But the Bulldogs came back with three runs in the third and led 4-1 in the fourth. They tacked on one more run in the sixth.

Salem mounted a comeback, scoring three runs in the bottom of the seventh only to fall short.

The Bulldogs had eight hits led by Alex Mayer with a double and an RBI, Henry Brent with a double and Rogan Allen with two singles and an RBI.

Mayer also went the first three innings on the mound, giving up one run on three hits and striking out three. Blake Verdeyen picked up the pitching win, going 3.2 innings, allowing three runs on two hits, three walks and striking out two.

In junior varsity action, St. Anthony won 10-6.

The Bulldogs had 13 hits led by Jonny Gannaway with a single, two doubles and two RBI, Freddie Jansen with three singles and two RBI, Charlie Hoene two singles and two RBI, Andrew Wagner two singles and an RBI, M. Fearday with two singles and Mason Karolewicz with two RBI.

At Salem

At Teutopolis

Teutopolis edged out to a 2-0 opening inning lead, then tacked on two more in the fourth and one in the sixth to blank Mahomet-Seymour, 5-0.

Davin Worman had quite a day. He led the team in hitting with a double, triple, home run and two RBI. He also picked up the pitching victory, going five innings, giving up only two hits, two walks while striking out seven.

The Wooden Shoes finished with 11 hits. Jason Kreke had a double and an RBI while Aidan Niemerg and Austin Borries had two singles each. Niemerg added an RBI.

Teutopolis blanked Tuscola 10-0 in a freshman/sophomore game.

The Shoes had 10 hits led by B. Schumacher with two singles, a home run and two RBI, L. Dittamore with two singles and three RBI, O. Pals with a double and an RBI, A. Grunloh with a double and O. Lynch and W. Bushur with a single and an RBI each.

At Altamont

Altamont played host to South Central and sent the Cougars home with a 5-1 loss Monday.

The Indians had a slight 6-5 edge in hitting. Kade Milleville led the way with three singles and two RBI while Cooper McManaway added a single and an RBI.

Carson Milleville went six innings on the mound for the pitching victory. He gave up one run on four hits, one walk and struck out five. Reed Stuemke came on to finish the final inning, giving up one run and striking out out two.

South Central was led by R. Dodson with a double.

At Altamont

Newton played host to Flora and handed the Wolves a 13-2 loss Monday.

The Eagles edged out to a 3-0 second inning lead then put the game away with a six-run third and a four-run fourth.

Newton had nine hits led by Gavin Meinhart with two singles and a double, David Ferguson with a double and two RBI, Quincy Fulton with two singles and an RBI, Drake Wolf with a single and two RBI and Maddox Horner with a single and an RBI.

Meinhart went the 4.1 innings, giving up two runs on six hits. He did not walk a batter and struck out five.

At Newton

Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg ended this game in the sixth inning via the 10-run rule by a 14-4 count over Central A&M Monday.

The Hatchets quickly moved into a 2-1 first inning lead then tacked on two more in the second.

It was two runs in the fourth and two more in the fifth before ending the game in the sixth by the 10-run rule with six more runs.

Windsor/Stew-Stras finished with 12 hits led by Carter Verdeyen with three singles, a double and three RBI, Branson Tingley with two doubles and an RBI, Seth Rincker with a single, double and two RBI and Wyatt Wetherell and Parker Duncan with a single and an RBI each.

Duncan went five innings for the pitching win. He gave up one run on two hits, three walks and struck out seven.

Dieterich and Vandalia were tied at 1-1 in the first inning before Vandalia took off with a four-run second, a one-run third and a two-run seventh for an 8-3 victory Monday.

Dieterich outhit the Vandals by a 9-6 count. Bryce Bohnhoff had the only extra base hit with a double and two RBI. Mason Lidy added two singles while Andrew Hall had two singles and an RBI.

Jackson Icenogle went 6.2 innings, giving up eight runs on six hits, four walks and striking out seven for the loss on the mound.

At Dieterich

Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City traveled to Charleston and fell to the homestanding Trojans, 11-1 in five innings Monday.

Charleston had nine hits and tore out to a 5-0 opening inning lead then had two runs in the second, third and fourth innings.

CHBC was led by Charlie Hardimon and Zach Bennett with a double each and Clive Schlanser with two singles.

Cumberland outhit Carlyle by an 11-9 tally but had one more error.

The Pirates were led by Adyn Heuerman with a single, double, home run and four RBI. Reed Miller added a single and two RBI. Hudson McElravy had a double and Maddox Miller a triple. Lance Lock had two singles and an RBI and Zach Hougham two singles.
