 St. Anthony, Dieterich, Teutopolis Win Junior High Baseball Regional Titles

It was an all-Effingham regional as Effingham St. Anthony defeated Effingham Sacred Heart 12-2  to win the Class 1A St. Anthony junior high baseball regional Wednesday.

The Bullpups edged out to a 1-0 opening inning lead then tacked on five more in the second and two in the fifth for an 8-0 lead. The Shamrocks mounted a comeback attempt but finished with only two runs in the top of the sixth. St. Anthony then came back to finish the game via the 1o-run rule with four in the bottom of the frame.

Reed Schumacher was the big hitter on the day for the Bullpups with two singles, a double and three RBI. Parker Phillips and Paxton Coulter finished with a double and an RBI each while Jaxon Having added two singles and an RBI and Sam Vineyard, Luke Roewe and Ryan Wohltman added a single and an RBI each. Bentley Baudier finished with an RBI.

Roewe threw 5.2 innings giving up two runs on four hits, two walks while striking out three for the win. Phillips came on giving up a walk before striking out the final batter.

Sacred Heart had four hits with singles by Gabe Traub, Lucas McDevitt, Logan Schoenhoff and Colton Mette.

The Bullpups advance to the Altamont Lutheran Sectional Saturday where they will square off against the winner of the Altamont Regional, Dieterich at 11 a.m.

Class 1A Altamont Regional

Dieterich came out the winner in the Altamont Regional by downing North Clay 9-5 Wednesday.

The Roadrunners moved into a 2-0 lead in the third inning but North Clay tied in the top of the fourth. However, Dieterich came right back to score seven runs in the bottom of the frame and hold off a North Clay rally in the seventh for the 9-5 victory.

Dieterich’s Chase Bohnhoff went 5.2 innings, allowing two runs on two hits, three walks and striking out seven for the win on the mound.

Colten Keck drove in four runs and had three singles for the winners. Nolan Nussmeyer and Maddox Nichols finished with a single and an RBI each.

The Roadrunners took advantage of 11 walks as Nolan Gipson, Reed Funneman and Turner Kessler had an RBI each.

Dieterich now advances to face Effingham St. Anthony at the Altamont Lutheran Sectional Saturday at 11 a.m.

Class 2A Teutopolis Regional

Cumberland got on the board in the bottom of the first inning with two runs but Teutopolis moved ahead with a three-run second and never looked back in the 11-3 victory.

Owen Wermert tripled, scoring two runs and Brock Witges singled, scoring the third run in the second inning. T-town added another run in the third after Mason Giles singled down the left field line.

The Wooden Shoes had 12 hits in the game. Weidner ended with a single, double and two RBI while Wermert had a single, triple and one RBI. Kason Meyer, Giles and  Witges finished with two singles and an RBI each. Myles Hoene had an RBI.

Kaleb Buenker went six innings, serving up six hits, three walks and striking out one. Wermert finished out the final inning with one strikeout and giving up two hits.

T-town ran wild on the base paths with 12 stolen bases. Connor Althoff, Giles and Weidner each stole multiple bases.

The Wooden Shoes advanced to its own sectional Saturday where they will square off against Marshall at 11 a.m. for the right to advance to the Class 2A State Tournament. Marshall edged Casey-Westfield 3-2 to win the Casey-Westfield Regional.

Class 2A Teutopolis Regional

Class 3A Effingham Regional

Effingham’s hopes of a regional championship went by the wayside with an 8-2 loss at the hands of Vandalia Wednesday.

The Mustangs moved into a 1-0 lead in the second inning. But Vandalia came right back in the third with two runs and tallied four more in the fifth. Effingham scored its final run in the bottom of the fifth.

Effingham finished with seven hits but committed five errors. Deek Thompson had a single and double while Levi Eckert added two singles and and RBI. Kael Koeberlein finished with an RBI. Calvin Beck, Brody Nelson and Roman Martin all had a single each.

Vandalia had eight hits led by J. Carroll with a home run and two RBI.

Vandalia (15-1-1) advances to the St. Jacob Triad Sectional where it will face Chatham Glenwood at 11 a.m.

Effingham finished the season with a 12-4-1 record in the last year for Coach Rod Wiethop who is retiring from coaching.
