Effingham St. Anthony finished with 10 hits in its season-opening 9-4 junior high baseball victory over Mount Zion Wednesday.
The Bullpups were led by Parker Phillips with two singles, a home run and one RBI and Bentley Baudier with a single and double. Reed Schumacher added two singles and an RBI. E. Bales, L. Roewe and J. Having had a single and an RBI each and K. Kiefer added an RBI.
Phillips also led the team on the mound. He went 3.1 innings, giving up one run on one hit, three walks while striking out five.
At St. Anthony

Effingham easily handled Champaign Edison to the tune of 15-0 in five innings Wednesday.
The Mustangs finished with 10 hits while C. Beck and D. Thompson combined to toss a two-hitter, giving up a hit each.
Effingham took a 6-0 lead in the second inning and never looked back.
Beck had two singles and drove in three runs while B. Nelson added two singles and two RBI and K. Koeberlein and A. LeDuc with two singles and an RBI each. P. O’Dell and D. Thompson had a single and two RBI each.
At Champaign

At Cowden
Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City took a 1-0 lead in the first inning but Newton St. Thomas came roaring back with three runs in the second Wednesday.
However, CHBC moved into a 4-3 lead in the fourth and put the contest away with an eight-run fifth for the 12-5 victory.
Remington Strange led the way with three singles and two RBI, Tyce Kircher with a double and three RBI, and Liam Day with a single and three RBI. Luke Roadarmel, Ben Noble, Tryston Brown and Elliot Thull had an RBI each.
Noble was the winning pitcher. He came on in the second inning to go 3.2 innings for the win. He gave up only one walk and did not give up a hit while striking out four.
“This was a great first win for our young team,” said CHBC Coach John Brown. “Our timely hitting, patience at the plate and great defense carried us to victory today.”

Stewardson-Strasburg claimed a 10-3 victory over Shelbyville in Wednesday action.
The two teams were tied at 2-2 in the second inning but Stew-Stras moved ahead 5-3 in the third and never looked back in the win.
Stew-Stras had seven hits. Ty Kramer had two singles and four RBI while Jacob Duncan had two singles and an RBI. Johnny Richter added a triple and an RBI and Tate Thompson a single and an RBI.
Stew-Stras used five pitchers with Ty Kramer picking up the victory going 2.1 innings allowing one run on three hits, two walks and striking out two.
