TORONTO — The Toronto Blue Jays reached 70 victories by handing the Chicago Cubs a 5-1 loss Tuesday.
The Cubs have now lost five of their last seven games.
Jose Berrios picked up the win on the mound for the Blue Jays to improve to 7-1.
Toronto took a 1-0 opening inning lead as Bo Bichette singled with one out and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. followed with a single. With two outs, Alejandro Kirk got the third single of the inning, scoring Bichette.
Things were quiet through the next two innings before Toronto tacked on three more runs in the fourth. Daulton Varsho opened the inning with a single. Ty France was hit by a pitch. Ernie Clement then followed with a home run to left field.
The lone run for the Cubs came in the seventh. Dansby Swanson drew a walk and Will Castro singled to right with Swanson racing to third. He came home on a single by Michael Busch.
The Blue Jays and Cubs square off again today. The Cubs are going with right-handed pitcher Cade Horton who is 6-3.
At St. Louis
The Colorado Rockies ended an eight-game losing streak by blanking the St. Louis Cardinals, 3-0 Tuesday.
The Rockies tallied two runs in the fourth. Tyler Freeman reached on a single but was caught attempting to steal second. Ezequiel Tovar then singled to left field and Hunter Goodman followed with a 442 foot home run.
The only other run of the game came in the fifth for the Rockies. Brenton Doyle drew a walk and Kyle Karros singled with Doyle heading to third. With one out, Kyle Farmer singled to centerfield and Doyle scored.
The Cardinals outhit the Rockies by a 6-5 count. Three times, when the Cardinals got a runner on base, they grounded into a double play.
The two teams meet today as the Cardinals put rookie Michael McGreevy on the mound.
