LOS ANGELES — The St. Louis Cardinals have their bats swinging and it showed Wednesday as they tallied 12 hits and took a 5-3 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers.
The Cardinals scored a run in the top of the third as Jordan Walker had an infield single. With two outs, Brendan Donovan put down a bunt single and Walker scored.
But the Dodgers came back with two runs in the bottom of the third. Alex Call doubled. With one out, Shohei Ohtani hit a homer and the Dodgers led 2-1.
They pushed that lead to 3-1 in the bottom of the fourth when Andy Pages singled, went to second on a wild pitch, stole third and scored on a throwing error by Pages.
That’s where the scoring stood until the sixth then the Cardinals brought home a run. Ivan Herrera drew a walk and Alec Burleson singled to to right field and Herrera went to third. Lars Nootbarr then grounded out but Herrera scored.
St. Louis tacked on two more in the eighth. Burleson singled to right. with one out, Masyn Winn singled to left. With two outs, Walker singled to centerfield and Burleson scored on an error. Winn scored on a second error on a throw by Alex Freeland at third.
Shohei Ohtani did what he could for the Dodgers. Not only did he come up big on the mound, he also showed power at the plate.
Ohtani went four innings on the mound, striking out eight. He gave up one run on two hits and did not walk a batter.
Along with that, Ohtani got his 1,000th career hit with a solo homer in the fourth.
The Cardinals head home and play host to the Chicago Cubs in a three-game series beginning Friday night with Matthew Boyd starting on the mound.
At Chicago
The Chicago Cubs and Cincinnati Reds went two scoreless innings before the Cubs struck with a run and never looked back in a 5-1 victory Wednesday.
The Cubs’ Nico Hoerner opened the bottom of the third with a single. Justin Turner then followed with a single and Hoerner went to third. Seiya Suzuki hit a sacrifice fly and Hoerner scored.
That’s where it stood until the Cubs scored another run in the sixth as Suzuki again was a part of the offense with a solo homer to left field.
It was then home run time as Dansby Swanson homered to left field in the bottom of the seventh. With two outs, Turner doubled. Suzuki drew a walk and Carson Kelly followed with a single that scored Turner.
Another home run, this one by Ian Happ in the eighth, went out in left centerfield. With two outs, Matt Shaw singled and took second on a wild pitch. He then came home when Hoerner singled.
Andrew Kittredge went to the mound in the seventh and threw all strikes as the Reds went up and down in order.
The Cubs have a day off before heading to St. Louis to face the Cardinals Friday night. Matthew Boyd goes to the mound for the Cubs.
