CHICAGO — Chicago Cubs fans were excited when the bottom of the ninth inning came Sunday.
The Baltimore Orioles tied the score in the top of the ninth at 3-3.
But then in the bottom of the frame, Cubs’ Dansby Swanson reached base on an error. Justin Turner got the nod to pinch hit for Michael Busch.
What Turner did next caused Cubs fans to celebrate when he hit the very first pitch off Keegan Akin over the wall in left centerfield for a two-run shot to give the Cubs a 5-3 victory.
The Cubs finished with 11 hits in the game led by Kyle Tucker, Nico Hoerner and Seiya Suzuki with two singles each. Suzuki finished with an RBI. Ian Happ had a double and drove in a run. Dansby Swanson had a single and an RBI.
The Cubs claimed two of the three games over the Orioles and are two games behind NL Central-leading Milwaukee. The Cubs now face the Cincinnati Reds Monday.
At San Diego
The San Diego Padres hosted the St. Louis Cardinals Sunday and captured a 7-3 victory behind a 10-hit attack.
The Padres held a 2-0 lead in the fourth then had a four-run seventh and crossed a final run over the plate in the eighth.
The Cardinals didn’t break loose until the top of the ninth, scoring all three runs. Ivan Herrera singled to centerfield and Alec Burleson singled to right. Willson Contreras then drew a walk and the bases were loaded.
Nolan Gorman then singled to centerfield and Herrera scored. Jordan Walker came up and singled to right field and Burleson scored. With one out, Lars Nootbarr hit a sacrifice fly to left and Contreras scored. Victor Scott II came up and singled to right field and the bases again were loaded. but Masyn Winn lined out for the third out to end the game.
