Chad Green
The Toronto Blue Jays have designated relief pitcher Chad Green, an Effingham High School graduate, for assignment.
That came after the Blue Jays acquired right-handed relief pitcher Seranthony Dominguez from the Baltimore Orioles Tuesday afternoon.
To make room for Dominguez, the Blue Jays have put Green into DFA. That means designated for assignment and is a way for a team to make roster changes while giving other teams a chance to claim the player.
Green, 34, has struggled this season for the Blue Jays. He has thrown 43 2/3 innings with a 5.56 earned run average. Green has given up 14 home runs, the most for a reliever in the Major Leagues this season.
Green returned from Tommy John surgery in 2023 and threw 12 innings for the Jays. Last season, Green tossed 53 1/3 innings with a 3.21 ERA. His strikeout rate was 21.9% and that went even lower this season.
He played for the New York Yankees from 2016 to 2022 where he threw 383 2/3 innings and had an ERA of 3.17 and a 32.5 percent strikeout rate.
He was with the Blue Jays in the 2024 season claiming 17 saves.
Green is still tossing 90mph fastballs but has been suffering as batters have been hitting those fastballs.
If he is released by the Blue Jays, he will still retain his salary. The 10-year Major League Baseball pitcher, has seven days to be claimed off waivers or be traded. He can reject an assignment to the minor leagues because he has more than five years of service time.
