CHICAGO — The Chicago Cubs scored what proved to be the winning run in the top of the eighth inning to edge the Chicago White Sox, 5-4 Sunday.
The Cubs took a 2-1 opening inning lead as Pete Crow-Armstrong doubled to drive in Seiya Suzuki and Kyle Tucker.
The White Sox came back in the bottom of the frame with a run as Andrew Benintendi homered.
The Cubs pushed into a 4-1 lead in the sixth when Nico Hoerner singled and Kelly scored. The Cubs then tacked on another run in the eighth. Ian Happ scored when White Sox’ Colson Montgomery was called for interference in a rundown.
The White Sox came back in the bottom of the eighth with three runs. Andrew Benintendi hit a three-run homer.
Next up, the Cubs are back in action at Milwaukee while the White Sox will meet the Phillies.
At St. Louis
San Diego took a 2-0 opening inning lead and went on to bounce St. Louis 9-2 behind a 16-hit attack.
The Cardinals finished with six hits. Alec Burleson had a double, home run and two RBI. Victor Scott finished with a double.
