The Chicago Cubs produced two runs in the second and went on to blank the Kansas City Royals by a 6-0 count Tuesday.
Chicago took that early lead then tacked on a single run in the fifth and three more in the seventh behind a nine-hit attack.
Pete Crow-Armstrong had the only extra base hit of the contest, a double and drove in a run. Nico Hoerner and Matt Shaw had two singles and an RBI each while Seya Suzuki and Carson Kelly finished with a single and an RBI each. Dansby Swanson added two singles.
The Cubs stole six bases. Justin Turner and Matt Shaw had a double steal in the second inning and the Cubs did it again as Kyle Tucker stole home and Seiya Suzuki second base in the seventh.
Matthew Boyd upped his pitching record to 11-3 on the season. He went seven innings, giving up four hits, striking out six and walking one.
At Colorado
The St. Louis Cardinals dropped an 8-4 loss to the Colorado Rockies Tuesday.
The two teams went through nine pitchers and both teams gave up 11 hits each.
Colorado took a 1-0 first inning lead and never relinquished that lead the rest of the way.
Brendan Donovan had a single, double and an RBI for the Cardinals while Willson Contreras and Jordan Walker had a single and double each. Yohel Pozo added a double and an RBI while Nolan Arenado and Mason Winn finished with a single and an RBI each. Alec Burleson added two singles.
The Cardinals wen through four pitchers. Erick Fedde started the contest, lasting three innings, giving up one walk, seven hits and striking out five. He dropped to 3-10 on the season.
