ST. LOUIS — The St. Louis Cardinals edged out to a 1-0 opening inning lead and went on to hand the Washington Nationals an 8-1 loss Thursday.
The Cardinals finished with 10 hits in the game. Masyn Winn had two doubles and an RBI while Wilson Contreras ended with two hits that included a solo home run in the seventh. Brendan Donovan had two hits and an RBI. Larson Nootbar added a double while Alec Burleson had a hit and two RBI. Nolan Arenado and Yohel Pozo finished with a hit and an RBI each and Victor Scott added an RBI.
The Cardinals scored single runs in the first and third, then had a five-run sixth and added on a final run in the seventh.
St. Louis will play host to Atlanta today at 7:15 p.m.
At Minnesota
The Chicago Cubs continued pounding the opposition’s pitchers with a 14-hit attack in an 8-1 victory over Minnesota Thursday.
The Cubs moved into a 1-0 lead in the second then added on two in the third. Single runs also came in the fourth, seventh and ninth while two was scored in the fifth.
Colin Rea moved his pitching record to 7-3. He went seven innings, allowing three hits while walking two and striking out five.
Seiya Suzuki finished with three hits. Dansby Swanson had a single, double and an RBI while Carson Kelly and Nico Hoerner had two hits each. Michael Busch added a single and two RBI. Hoerner finished with one RBI as did Matt Shaw.
The Cubs are back in action today at the New York Yankees at 6:05 p.m.
