ST. LOUIS — Home runs again were the demise of the Chicago Cubs as the St. Louis Cardinals took an 8-7 victory Tuesday at Busch Stadium.

The Cardinals moved into a 2-0 lead in the second inning on a two-run shot by Lars Nootbaar.

But the Cubs came back with a five-run third. Kyle Tucker hit a two-run single and then Seiya Suzuki hit a three-run homer that went 404 feet and the Cubs held a 5-2 lead.

The Cardinals pulled within 5-4 in the bottom of the third as Masyn Winn connected on a two-run homer.

St. Louis then went on a tear, scoring four runs in the fourth to move into an 8-5 lead. Here came another home run as Nolan Gorman led off the frame with a solo shot to tie the score at 5-5. Winn then came through again, this time with a two-run double and dented the plate as Alec Burleson hit a sacrifice fly, making it 8-5.

The Cubs mounted a comeback with two runs in the sixth when Nico Horner hit his first home run of the season, driving in two runs.

Chicago came back again in the seventh with runners on first and third. But the Cardinals got out of the frame as JoJo Romero made a throw to first for an out and Alec Burleson made a catch in right field to end the frame.

The Cubs outhit the Cardinals by a 13-10 count but St. Louis finished with three home runs.

The Cardinals will go with right-handed pitcher Erick Edde (3-6, 3.54 ERA) against the Cubs’ Matthew Boyd (6-3, 2.84 ERA) tonight in the four-game series that will end Thursday.
