CHAMPAIGN — Teutopolis High School pulled out the big guns Friday as they banged out eight hits, making them count, in a 9-3 victory over Newman Central Catholic at the Class 2A State Baseball Tournament.
The Wooden Shoes scored a run to get things started in the top of the first. With one out, Davin Worman drew a walk and stole second. With two outs, Jason Kreke tripled to bring Worman across the plate.
But Central Catholic tied the score in the bottom of the frame as leadoff hitter Garret Matznick doubled to left field. Garrett Wolfe grounded out and Matznick moved to third. Ashton Miner then hit a sacrifice fly that scored Matznick.
The second inning, the Wooden Shoes struck again, this time with three runs. Henry Thompson drew a walk and Teegan Pals singled. Gavin Addis hit a sacrifice bunt with Thompson advancing. Aidan Niemerg then followed with a single, scoring Thompson and Pals took third. Niemerg stole second. D. Hoene was out on a sacrifice fly that scored Pals. Mick Niebrugge then singled Niemerg home and the Shoes led 4-0.
Central Catholic’s Michael Morse led off with a single in the third. Joe Oswalt then hit a fielder’s choice and Morse was out at second. Liam Nicholas then grounded into a double play as second baseman Thompson tossed to shortstop D. Hoene to first baseman M. Niebrugge.
However Central Catholic came back with two runs in the third on a walk to Evan Bushman, a single by Maznick and a double by Ashton Minor and the Comets had pulled within 4-3.
But here came the Shoes once again. This time around Niemerg led off with a triple. With one out, Worman singled Niemerg home. Niebrugge followed with a double and Jason Kreke drew a walk, scoring a run. Carter Hoene got on with a walk. Thompson followed with s sacrifice scoring a run and the Shoes held a 7-3 lead.
Central Catholic put runners on base in the fourth but the Shoes got out of the inning unscathed.
T-town tallied two more runs in the sixth as Niebrugge drew a walk and Jason Kreke followed with a home run to left field.
Deters went 4.1 innings in relief of Worman to claim the win on the mound. He tossed a three-hitter with one walk and three strikeouts and improved his record to 7-0.
The Wooden Shoes improved to 30-5 on the season and moved into the championship game Saturday against Springfield Sacred Heart Griffin at 7 p.m. Sacred Heart Griffin was a 6-5 winner over Eureka.
