SALEM — Playing before its home crowd, Salem High School ended Effingham’s season with an 8-2 victory in its own Class 3A Baseball Regional Saturday.
The Hearts held a 2-0 opening inning lead thanks to two home runs by Carter Braddy and Colton Webb.
Salem scored a run in the third then broke the game open with a five-run fifth to move ahead 6-2. The Wildcats tacked on single runs in the sixth and seventh.
Ryan Detering earned the win for Salem. He gave up four hits and two runs over seven innings, striking out eight and walking two.
The Wildcats had 11 hits in the contest led by Noah Nix with a home run and two RBI, Rhett Detering with a single and solo homer and Jalen Inlow with a single, double and two RBI.
The Hearts had four hits and an error. Braddy and Webb hit their solo shots and Wyatt Hayes and Brody Boehm with a single each.
The Hearts went through four pitchers, who gave up eight runs, 11 hits, four walks and struck out six.
Salem earned the regional championship and will advance to the Troy Triad Sectional Wednesday to face the Mascoutah in the first game at 2 p.m. The second game features Troy Triad vs. Marion at 4 p.m.
