 Wooden Shoes Down Bulldogs, Wins Class 2A Baseball Sectional

TEUTOPOLIS — Teutopolis High School broke loose with four runs in the bottom of the seventh to pull out a 5-4 victory over Effingham St. Anthony for the championship of its own Class 2A Teutopolis Baseball Sectional Saturday.

The Wooden Shoes had taken a 1-0 opening inning lead as Davin Worman, with one out, hit a single, then stole second base. With two outs, Jason Kreke drew a walk. Austin Borries then followed with a single, bringing Worman across the plate.

But St. Anthony came back with two runs to move ahead in the second inning. With one out, Sam Link singled. With two outs, Charlie Spour tripled, bringing Link home. Spour then scored on an error.

The Bulldogs put runners on base in the third as Brock Fearday singled, and in the fourth as Spour singled and Will Fearday was hit by a pitch.

T-t0wn had runners on in the second, third, fourth and fifth innings but couldn’t get them past first base.

In the fifth, St. Anthony’s B. Fearday was hit by a pitch and Aiden Lauritzen reached on an error.  Henry Brent hit a pop up to the pitcher who caught it for the first out then threw catching pinch St. Anthony’s runner off  base for a double play. The third out came on a fly ball.

In the sixth, Spour drew a walk for the Bulldogs but was taken out on a fielder’s choice ball hit by Vincent Vogel. The Wooden Shoes got the next two outs to end the frame.

Meanwhile, T-town went up and down in the sixth.

St. Anthony then pushed its lead to 4-1 in the top of the seventh. B. Fearday led off with a single and stole second. Lauritzen then followed with a home run.

But never count the Wooden Shoes out. Coach Justin Fleener’s crew came to bat in the bottom of the seventh. Henry Thompson led off with a triple and Gavin Addis drew a walk. Aiden Niemerg was then walked to load the bases. Dawson Hoene was hit by a pitch and Thompson scored. Worman followed with a grounder that scored Addis. With two outs, St. Anthony had back to back errors on the next two Wooden Shoes batters and the game ended with T-town winning 5-4.

T-town finished with four hits led by Thompson with a single and triple and Worman and Borries with a single and an RBI each. Hoene added an RBI.

St. Anthony had seven hits led by Lauritzen’s two-run homer, Spour with a single, triple and an RBI and B. Fearday with two singles.

Teutopolis now advances to the Carbondale Super-Sectional today to face DuQuoin at 7 p.m. The winner advances to the Class 2A State Tournament.
